Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

(Little Rock, AR) - Former Hooks' pitcher Fernando Nieve will get the chance to shine on the world's stage next month when the seventh annual XM Satellite Radio All-Star Futures Game is played at Comerica Park in Detroit. Nieve and the others who will be participating in the game were announced this week by Major League Baseball.

Nieve, still the Texas League's leader in strikeouts with 96, made 14 first-half starts for the Hooks before receiving his promotion to Triple-A Round Rock this past weekend. The 22-year-old right-hander was 4-3 for Corpus Christi with a 2.65 ERA. In 85 innings, he had allowed just 62 hits and 29 walks. His 2.65 ERA still ranks third best in the Texas League.

"Fernando deserves this selection," said Hooks' manager Dave Clark, just moments before the start of the second half of the Texas League season in Little Rock, Arkansas. "Nieve had it in his mind at the beginning of this season that he would reach the big leagues before the year was out. I don't know when he'll make it, but he will definitely pitch in the major leagues. Fernando is always prepared, physically and mentally, and he can handle any task that's put before him."

A native of Venezuela, Nieve will compete for the World Team in the Sunday, July 10th Futures Game, which is slated to begin at 4:00 pm. The game will be televised by ESPN2 and will also be broadcast on MLB Radio.

The 25-man rosters for both the World Team and the U.S. Team were selected by Major League Baseball Operations and the Major League Scouting Bureau in conjunction with the 30 Major League clubs and Baseball America.
