Springfield Cardinals News Release

After waiting until their fifth game of the first half for their first win of the year, the Cards didn't have to wait nearly as long in the second half. The Springfield Cardinals opened up the second half of the Texas League season with a 7-2 victory over the San Antonio Missions on Thursday night at Hammons Field.

A sold-out crowd of over 8,000 fans witnessed Stuart Pomeranz collect his first win at the Double-A level, pitching seven strong innings in getting the win. Pomeranz saw his offense put up the game's first seven runs, in support of his first victory in a Springfield uniform.

Tyler Minges knocked in Shaun Boyd with a first-inning triple, as the Cards went up 1-0. Juan Diaz followed Minges' three-bagger with a two-run shot to left field, his ninth of the year, making it 3-0.

Papo Bolivar made it a 5-0 game, blasting a two-run homer to left field off San Antonio starter Jon Huber (4-4) in the fourth inning. Huber then issued a one-out walk to Milko Jaramillo, who would later score on an error by San Antonio second baseman Ismael Castro, making it 6-0.

The Cards got their final run of the night in the fifth, as Pete Zoccolillo, making his first appearance in a Springfield uniform, walked to lead off the inning. Zoccolillo, who finished the night with a double and a walk, going 1-3, scored on another error by second baseman Ismael Castro.

San Antonio's only runs came in the seventh, as Jesse Hoorelbeke hit a two-run homer to straight-away center field, putting the Missions on the board at 7-2. Pomeranz worked through the seventh, retiring the final two men he faced to end a great night. Pomeranz (1-0) went a season-best seven innings, allowing just two runs on five hits. The right-hander struck out five and walked two on the night.

Jeremy Cook worked two scoreless innings to finish off the Missions.

The Cardinals are now 1-0 in the second half and 36-35 overall. Jeremy Cummings (1-1) will throw for Springfield on Friday night, while San Antonio counters with Bobby Livingston (6-3). Game time from Hammons Field is 7:10pm. Friday night, 10,000 fans will receive a free Cardinals hat thanks to Ozarks Coca-Cola. In addition to free hats, everyone will enjoy a huge Fireworks Celebration thanks to 417 Magazine and AM Pyrotechnics.
