Omaha Lancers News Release
Ralston, NE - The Omaha Lancers, proud members of the United States Hockey League are excited to announce that second-year forward Nick Rivera has committed to play collegiate ice hockey at Minnesota State University-Mankato.
"I'm honored for the privilege to play at Minnesota State-Mankato," said Rivera. "The Mavericks have an amazing reputation on the ice and behind the bench. I can't thank the coaching staff in Omaha enough for all that they have done and I can't wait to get this season going."
During his rookie season with the Lancers in 2014-15, the native of California notched 14 goals and 14 assists in 58 games played. Rivera recorded his first USHL goal, which was the eventual game-winning goal on November 21st in a 4-1 win on the road at Lincoln. However, arguably Rivera's best performance of the season came on March 20th in Fargo where he scored three goals for the hat-trick in a 6-2 victory.
"Nick is well-deserving of this opportunity and we're all extremely happy for him," said Lancers head coach & general manager Brian Kaufman. "Nick is one of the hardest workers both on and off the ice. His leadership abilities and dedication to the game will make him the perfect fit for Minnesota State-Mankato."
The Mavericks are led by former 14-year Omaha Lancers head coach and Clark Cup Champion Mike Hastings, who this past April was named the STX/AHCA Men's Hockey NCAA Division I Coach of the Year after he led Minnesota State to its third consecutive trip to the NCAA postseason.
Before coming to Omaha, Rivera played one season with the Wenatchee Wild, formally of the North American Hockey League (NAHL). In 59 regular season games played, he put up 18 goals and nine assists. During their Robertson Cup playoff run in 2013-2014, Rivera added a trio of goals in ten games.
Rivera becomes the third member of the Omaha Lancers to commit at Minnesota State-Mankato. He will join Josh French and Michael Bigelbach on the Mavericks.
