Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH- Youngstown Phantoms Assistant Coach John Ronan will join the staff of the Mercyhurst Lakers, a Division I hockey program that competes in the Atlantic Hockey Association (AHC). Ronan served the Phantoms organization for the 2014-15 season, primarily working with the club's forwards and power-play units.
"We are very happy for John and this new opportunity he has in his coaching career. He was a pleasure to work with this past season, and I am confident he will have success with Mercyhurst. We thank John for his time here with the Phantoms, and wish him and his family nothing but the best in their future endeavors," said Phantoms General Manager Jason Koehler.
Before his stint in Youngstown, Ronan helped lead Union College to the NCAA National Championship as a volunteer assistant coach. Prior to Union, the South Boston, Massachusetts, native enjoyed a successful pro career that featured stops in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), Central Hockey League (CHL), Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), International Hockey League (IHL), and overseas in the Netherlands. In 414 professional games, Ronan racked up 139 goals and 152 assists.
"Since I came to Youngstown a year ago I have grown not only as a coach, but also as a man. The time I spent with (former Phantoms Head Coach) Anthony Noreen, Brad Patterson, and Jason Koehler helped me beyond measure, and I am very grateful for the opportunity I had to coach and learn with these men. The USHL is a developmental league, not just for players but for coaches as well, and I am excited to take the next step in my coaching career," said John Ronan.
Ronan, a University of Maine graduate, spent four seasons with the Black Bears, where he served as the team's captain during his senior year in 2004-05. In 132 career games at Maine, he tallied 25 goals and 22 assists for 47 points.
The Youngstown Phantoms will be conducting a search for a new Assistant Coach effective immediately.
