Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Robstown - Brian Nichols hit his team-leading eighth and ninth home runs of the season to lead the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings past the Coastal Bend Thunder 10-4 tonight at Richard M. Borchard Fairgrounds Field.
The WhiteWings (25-31) got on the board against Toro Trevino (5-4) in the second. Brian Nichols and Welinson Baez led off with back-to-back home runs. One out later, Juan Cbarera singled, Justin Holloway walked and Sandy DeLeon reached on an infield-single to load the bases. Agustin Septimo followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
Rico Santana led off the third with a grounder to short. Amadeo Zazueta threw the ball into the WhiteWings dugout, allowing Santana to go to second base. After Nichols was hit by a pitch, Baez laid down a sacrifice bunt. The throw hit off of Manny Mejia's glove at first, but it didn't get very far away. Nichols went towards third and got caught in-between second and third. The throw came into second, at which point Santana took off for home. The throw to the plate was not in time as Nichols moved to third. One out later, Cabrera hit an RBI double to make it 5-0 and knock out Trevino.
Septimo led off the fourth with an infield single against Alex Gett. One out later, Santana walked and Nichols followed with his second home run of the game to make it 8-0.
With one out in the fifth, Holloway, DeLeon and Septimo singled to load the bases. Joaquin Rodriguez followed with an RBI-groundout to make it 9-0.
The Thunder (26-30) responded against Reymond Cruz (5-4) in the bottom of the fifth. Bryan Vickers led off with an infield-single and Kevin Butler reached on an error. A groundout advanced the runners. Chris Lewis and Leivi Ventura hit back-to-back RBI-single, Meija hit an RBI- double and Alex Fernandez hit an RBI-groundout to make it 9-4.
That was it against Cruz, who allowed four runs (two earned) on seven this and one walk while striking out four in seven innings.
Holloway hit his second home run of the season in the ninth against Benny Cepeda to complete the scoring.
The WhiteWings return to Harlingen Field to host the San Angelo Colts tomorrow night in game of a four-game series at 7:05. Left-hander Jesus Sanchez (3-1) is expected to face left-hander Drew Coffey (2-1).
