San Angelo Colts News Release
Laredo led San Angelo 4-3 in the seventh inning; but everything went well for the Colts, in the final at-bats, as the United League's top team earned a split of a four-game set. San Angelo held on for a 7-6 win and completed the eight home stretch with a 4-4 mark.
Brian Henschel (8-3) did not throw a complete game. After allowing four runs in the first inning, however, he settled down and tossed eight effective innings. The loss was credited to Julio Pinto (2-3). In defeat, Pinto surrendered three earned runs and five hits in 1.1 innings of work. Chace Vacek was credited with the save (12) even though he surrendered two runs in the ninth.
The Laredo Broncos struck in the first inning with some timely hitting and shaky Colts defense. Luis Ugueto led off with a single and David Cardona was hit by a pitch. Mario Mendez then reached on an error by right-fielder, Nick Mahin, to load the bases. Argelis Nunez, who was ejected the previous night, avenged the ruling by serving a two run base-hit to left-center. Luany Sanchez followed with an RBI single to center to give the road team a three-nothing edge. The final tally in the frame came on a passed ball with Argelis Nunez stationed at third base.
San Angelo attacked Laredo in the bottom of the second to jump back in the game. Aaron Cone reached base on a walk and Josh Collazo singled. After Mahin struck out, Hunter Jobes took his base and Cody Pride knocked in a run with a grounder to short. Ronnie Gaines walked to re-load the bases before Jason Diaz reached on an error. The second baseman hit a sharp ground ball to first; it was mishandled by Sanchez to plate Collazo and Jobes as the center-fielder snuck in ahead of the tag of Jake Wells.
The Colts charged to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Three consecutive singles by Bryan Frichter, Jason Landreth, and Aaron Cone pushed across that tying run.
In an impressive comeback, the Colts completed the task by scoring another in the eighth. Jobes reached on a broken bat base knock to the left side of the infield. Pride sent Jobes to second on a sacrifice bunt before Gaines delivered a booming double to left-center. The extra-base hit gave the home team it's first lead of the night. The home squad added two more and seemed to be in prime position to cruise to victory
Laredo, though, jousted back in the ninth; consecutive singles by Sanchez and Andres Santos along with a Robert Moron walk loaded the bases. Pinch hitter, Alejandro Martinez grounded into a fielder's choice scoring Sanchez and pushing runners to the corners. With one retired, Morales served an RBI single to close the gap to one. Luis Ugueto and David Cardona, however, recorded outs in the ninth to seal the road squads' fate.
Tommorrow night, the Colts head to Harlingen to take on the Rio Grande Valley White Wings in the first of a four game set. The projected starter for the Colts is left-hander Drew Coffey (2-1, 3.36 ERA). Coverage begins with the Kemps Ice Cream pre-game show at 6:50 PM on KCLL COOL 100.1 FM.
