Can San Angelo Colt's Frichter break the ULB batting Record?
August 7, 2009 - United League Baseball (ULB) News Release
Bryan Frichter, San Angelo Colts heavy-hitting infielder, is on pace to be the United League Baseball's first .400 hitter.
The question is, can he keep that pace?
The 6 foot, 180-pound Frichter just seems to be improving each year. Hitting at a .417 rate, it is nearly 60 points above his mark last year, his first with the league-leading Colts (37-18). He missed nearly a dozen games this season, when he was out with a broken nose.
He also leads in stolen bases with 25.
Frichter is a native of Chalmette, La., located near New Orleans and a city that was completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
In 2008, he hit .349 for the Colts, with 12 home runs, 62 RBIs and 72 runs scored.
Prior to that he played two years for Southeastern Louisiana University. In 2007, he played all 55 games for the school, batting .319, with 15 doubles.
Colts Field Manager Doc Edwards says that Frichter is greatly responsible for the fact the ballclub is out in front in the ULB. "He is talented and he works toward perfection," Edwards said.
A former Colt, John Anderson, holds the ULB batting record, with a .390 mark, set in 2006, the league's inaugural year.
Frichter is one of three Colts whose hitting is among the top 10. The others are Jason Landreth, third with a .356 mark, and Butch Ballez, ninth at .328.
It's not been just the hitting that has kept the Colts in first place with the season winding down (25 regular season games left); they have some of the best hurlers in the ULB in Chandler Barnard (9-1), Brian Henschel (7-3), who is first in ERAs at 1.81, and Ezequiel Anastacio (6-1).
The Amarillo Dillas (29-26), meanwhile, are in second place, down seven games, but leading the pack of four clubs trying to stay in the running for the playoffs.
They are followed by the Edinburg Roadrunners (28-27) the Coastal Bend Thunder (26-29) and the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (24-31). Laredo brings up the rear at 21-34, but have defeated the San Angelo Colts a total of seven times out of 24 games.
The Colts have cooled down a bit and have won five of their last 10 games, while the Dillas have also won five of 10. Edinburg has won serven, the Broncos six, while Coastal Bend has only won four of the last 10 and the Wings have won three and have only won one in the last eight games.
Landreth leads in home runs with 14, Trent Lockwood of Amarillo has 11 and Laredo's Argelis Nunez has 10.
Landreth leads in RBIs with 54, Lockwood has 47, Nunez has 49 amd Amarillo's Terrance McClain has 47.
The Colts still lead in team batting, at .296. Second is Amarillo, .286 followed by Laredo, .283; Rio Grande Valley, .276; Edinburg, .269; and Coastal Bend, .262.
The Dillas also have three among the top 10 in hitting.
They are Keanon Simon, second at .358, Carlos Figueroa, sixth and Terrance McClain, eighth, with a .347..
Other top 10 hitters include:
Luis Ugueta, Laredo, .344; Nunez, 345; Brian Nichols, Rio Grande Valley, .340; and Robert Matlock, Edinburg, .320.
Frichter leads in stolen bases, with 25, followed by Dustin Smith, Coastal Bend, 23.
WhiteWings closer Julio Santana has the most saves, 14, followed by Chase Vacek with 10.
Upcoming games:
Through August 11 -- Coastal Bend at Amarillo, Laredo at Edinburg and San Angelo at Rio Grande Valley. August 12-15 - Laredo at Amarillo, San Angelo at Coastal Bend and Edinburg at Rio Grande Valley.
