July 28, 2023 - Carolina League (CarL)
Carolina Mudcats News Release
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Kay-Lan Nicasia homered in the second and had a two-run double in the third while driving in four runs, and Gregory Barrios and Luis Lara had two-run singles as the Carolina Mudcats defeated the Columbia Fireflies 12-2 on Friday night at Segra Park. The victory was Carolina's fourth straight and clinched a series victory for the Mudcats.
The Mudcats (17-10, 50-40) scored 11 of their 12 runs over the first three innings with two in the first, two in the second and seven in the third. They also totaled seven of their first 12 hits over the first three innings while running away with their fourth straight victory.
Despite all of the early off, neither of Carolina's first two runs were driven in directly off hits as a bases loaded hit by pitch and wild pitch put Carolina up 2-0 in the first. The second inning, however, featured Nicasia's two-run homer that gave the Mudcats a 4-0 lead.
The Fireflies (13-15, 48-45) cut the deficit in half at 4-2 in the home half of the second with a two-run homer from Hayden Dunhurst, but Carolina answered with seven runs and five hits in the third while running away with an 11-2 lead. Gregory Barrios, Nicasia and Luis Lara each had two-run hits with Nicasia doubling in two and both Barrios and Lara driving in two with singles in the third.
Samuel Valerio (L, 1-4) started for the Fireflies and took the loss after allowing Carolina's first four runs over his two inning start. Reliever Wesley Scott took over in the third, but left after allowing all seven third inning runs while recording just one out. Oscar Rayo finished the third in relief of Scott and went on to work through five and 2/3 scoreless. Carolina later scored one last run when reliever Nicholas Regalado walked in a run.
Will Rudy started and allowed Dunhurst's homer in the second, but held the Fireflies without another run through the remainder of his five inning start. Rudy (W, 5-2) struck out five, walked two and scattered six hits while reaching 86 pitches (58 strikes).
Relievers Jose Chavez and Jeferson Figueroa split the final four innings with both tossing scoreless frames. Chavez allowed just one hit and struck out three while facing seven batters over the sixth and seventh. Figueroa walked a batter, but struck out four while facing the final eight batters across the eighth and ninth.
