ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign, primary affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, have signed center Kris Newbury to an American Hockey League contract for the 2015-16 season, Reign Director of Hockey Operations Hubie McDonough announced on Monday.
Newbury, 33, joins the Reign after spending the 2014-15 season with the Hershey Bears. The native of Brampton, Ontario collected 48 points (18-30H) and 171 penalty minutes in 68 regular season games, and added four assists and 16 penalty minutes in 10 Calder Cup Playoff games.
The 5-foot-11, 205-pound pivot has posted totals of 10 points (4-6) and 139 penalty minutes in 76 career NHL games split between the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers.
In 730 career AHL games with St. John's, Toronto, Grand Rapids, Connecticut/Hartford, Adirondack and Hershey, Newbury has accumulated 536 points (178-358S6) and 1,710 penalty minutes. He also skated in the ECHL with the Pensacola Ice Pilots, tallying six points (2-4=6) and 20 penalty minutes in six matches.
Prior to turning pro, Newbury skated with the Belleville Bulls and Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League, posting totals of 306 points (122-18406) and 621 penalty minutes in 306 games.
Newbury was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round (139th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
