Worcester Tornadoes News Release

After falling into a five-run hole in the seventh inning, the Tornadoes fought back valiantly before falling 8-7 in another close game between Newark and Worcester.

Worcester scored four runs in the eight inning before recording an out but Bears closer Jorge Vasquez came on in the middle of the eight to strike out all five players batters he faced.

Mike Gedman led the Tornadoes offensive efforts with a 3-for-4 night including his second home run of the season and two RBI. Cam Kneeland added a three-run home run in the eighth to cut the deficit to 8-7 before Vasquez came on to shut down Worcester.

Alex Nunez had a productive night for Worcester finishing 1-2 with a pair of RBI and two walks.

Walker McKinven started off his night strong before tailing off to take his fourth loss of the year. McKinven allowed just two runs through the first four innings, before giving up three earned over his final an inning and a-third. The righty finished his night allowing seven hits, five earned runs and four walks.

Newark's three pitchers (Omar Javier, Sergio Espinosa, Jorge Vasquez) combined for 16 strikeouts, a new high for the Tornadoes offense. The trio allowed just seven hits and seven earned runs, while walking seven batters.

The Tornadoes jumped off to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Gedman and Chris Torres led off the inning with back-to-back base hits to put runners on second and third. Nunez followed with a fielder's choice to plate Gedman but Javier bore down in the second.

Newark went on to score six of the next eight runs as the Bears grabbed an 8-3 lead after six. Nine-hole hitter Glen Johnson and leadoff hitter Mike Richard provided most of the damage by reaching base nine out of 10 times and scoring seven times.

Worcester cut into the deficit in a big way in the eight with four runs. Gedman led off the inning with a blast to center on the first pitch of the inning to make it 8-4. After Torres and Nunez singled back-to-back, Kneeland pounded a breaking ball from Sergio Espinosa to make it 8-7 and end the reliever's outing.

Vasquez came out for the second night in a row and earned his league-high 16th save by striking out all five batters he faced on just 25 pitches.

Worcester and Newark will resume their series Wednesday night when Connor Hulse takes the mound at 7:05 p.m.
