Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y.) - The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Newark Bears on Saturday 6-4 in front of a past-capacity crowd of 6,166 at Citibank Park.
Newark struck early, plating two runs in the first inning on a two-RBI single by Cory Aldridge. The Bears designated hitter was 2-for-4 on the night and drove in three runs. The Ducks answered with a run in the second on a Jamie Pogue single. Long Island grabbed the lead in the third on a Kevin Haverbusch sacrifice fly and a run-scoring hit by third baseman Damian Rolls.
The Bears took the lead back in the fourth with two runs. The 4-3 lead held until the seventh, when Carl Everett blasted his first home run of the season to tie the game. Again the visitors would answer, however, snapping the tie an inning later on a base hit by Aldridge and an infield single by catcher John Pachot.
Everett was 2-for-5 for the Ducks with two runs scored, and Rolls had a 3-for-4 night at the plate. Bears second baseman Bobby Hill had a pair of hits, while Pachot drove in two and shortstop Vic Gutierrez added an RBI as well.
Cory Willey (1-0) picked up the win for the Bears with two innings of work. His lone hit was the home run to Everett. Benito Baez went four innings in the start, giving up three runs on eight hits. Manny Ulloa pitched three and two-thirds innings for the Ducks, allowing four runs - two earned - on five hits with four strikeouts. Ben Grezlovski (0-1) took the loss, and southpaw reliever Ryan Knippschild impressed in his Ducks debut, setting down all 10 batters he faced. Former Major League hurler Al Levine picked up the save for Newark.
