Red Bull New York News Release
SECAUCUS, NJ (September 15, 2008) - Red Bull New York announced today the signing of 23-year old Senagalese forward Macoumba Kandji on loan to play for the Red Bulls until the end of the 2008 MLS season. MLS and the Red Bulls finalized the loan and agreed to personal terms with Kandji and the Atlanta Silverbacks of the United Soccer Leagues' First Division before today's MLS Roster Freeze Deadline. Kandji passed a physical on Monday and will be added to the Red Bulls' roster, occupying an international roster spot. The League will have the option to transfer his rights permanently to the Red Bulls on or before Dec. 15, 2008.
"We're pleased to sign Mac," said Sporting Director Jeff Agoos. "We think that his athleticism and his ability to score goals will make him an immediate contributor to our team as we make a push into the playoffs."
A Silverback for the past two seasons, Kandji appeared in 21 matches this year, scoring 11 goals and five assists. The Dakar, Senegal native was named to the USL-1 Best XI five times, including twice being named USL-1 Player of the Week (Weeks 10 and 16).
In 2007, Kandji, 23, played a combined 12 games in the regular season and playoffs and scored two goals after making his professional debut on Aug. 4 against the Charleston Battery. Kandji was named the USL-1 Player of the Week in Week 17. He played a key role in helping the Silverbacks reach the USL Championship Match.
Kandji was also a member of the Atlantic Silverbacks Under-23 squad of the Premier Development League. He attended Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, GA, from 2004-05, where earned All-Region honors and notched 17 goals and six assists in 2005, putting him fourth in the region.
