New York Red Bulls Defeat Atlético de San Luis, 2-1, Advance to Leagues Cup Knockout Stage

New York Red Bulls (1-0-1 5 pts.) draw against Club Atlético de San Luis (0-0-2, 0 pts.) 2-1 at Red Bull Arena on Saturday night.

The scoring started in the 56th minute when John Tolkin sent in a ball from a corner kick that found the head of Dante Vanzeir, who finished the ball into the back of the net.

Atlético de San Luis answered back in the 69th minute when John Murillo smashed a loose ball past the goalkeeper to level the match.

Goalkeeper Carlos Coronel saved a penalty kick in the 90th minute to keep the match at 1-1.

Two minutes into stoppage time, Vanzeir received yet another ball from Tolkin and grabbed his second goal of the match to give New York the late lead.

With the victory, the Red Bulls topped East 4 Group in 2023 Leagues Cup ahead of New England Revolution.

The goals from Vanzeir were his first and second in Leagues Cup play and increased his season total to five across all competitions.

Vanzeir recorded his first career multi-goal game for New York.

Tolkin's assists were his fifth and sixth across all competitions this season, and his first two in Leagues Cup play. It was his first-career multi-assist match for New York.

He has tallied 11 career assists across all competitions for the Red Bulls.

New York has posted a 17-2-6 record at Red Bull Arena in competitions excluding MLS regular season and playoffs.

New York has advanced to the knockout stage of the 2023 Leagues Cup and will face off against New York City FC in the Round of 32 on Thursday, August 3.
