NEW YORK, NY - September 24, 2012 - New York Liberty Head Coach and General Manager John Whisenant announced today that the team has extended guard Cappie Pondexter's contract. Per team policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Cappie is our MVP and the type of player that is rare. While fans marvel at her skill and athleticism, it's her passion for the game, competitiveness, work ethic and leadership that really make her special," said Whisenant. "We are very happy that she will be continuing her career with the Liberty."

Pondexter added: "There is no place better to play basketball than New York. It is an absolute honor to represent this great city. Madison Square Garden and the New York Liberty have proven to be world-class organizations, and I am excited to continue on with them in our quest for a championship."

For the 2012 regular season, Pondexter led the Liberty, and ranked third in the WNBA, in average points per game (20.4). She tied her career-high of 4.5 rebounds per game and ranked tenth in the league in assists per game (4.3). Her 90% free throw percentage made her the seventh best in the WNBA. During her three years with the Liberty, Pondexter has started every game and led the team in points each season. She was acquired by the Liberty from the Phoenix Mercury on March 30, 2010.

Pondexter has started every game of her WNBA career (231), racking up averages of 19.5 points, 4.3 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game during her seven seasons. She has been named a WNBA All-Star four times, and won two WNBA Championships with the Phoenix Mercury (2007, 2009). In 2007, Pondexter was also named WNBA Finals MVP. Pondexter was originally selected by the Mercury in the first round (second overall) of the 2006 WNBA Draft.
