
Angel McCoughtry, Tina Charles and Lindsay Whalen Capture 2012 WNBA Peak Performer Honors

NEW YORK (Sept. 24, 2012) - Angel McCoughtry (Atlanta Dream), Tina Charles (Connecticut Sun) and Lindsay Whalen (Minnesota Lynx) have won the 2012 WNBA Peak Performer Awards for scoring, rebounding and assists, respectively, the WNBA announced today.
The WNBA presents the Peak Performer awards annually to the players who lead the league in each of those categories during the regular season. Each player will receive a trophy crafted by Tiffany in honor of her accomplishments.
McCoughtry earned her first Peak Performer award for scoring after averaging 21.4 points per game in 2012. The four-year veteran averaged more than 20 points per game for the third straight year and shot 45 percent from the floor. The Louisville product scored 20 or more points in 18 games this season, including a season-high 33 against Chicago on June 2. Her career average of 19.0 points per game ranks her fourth all-time in the league.
Leading the league in rebounds per game with 10.5, Charles bested runner-up Sylvia Fowles (10.4 rpg) of the Chicago Sky for the second-straight year. The 2010 Rookie of the Year captured her third straight rebounding title in the same year that she became the fastest player in league history to reach 800. 900, 1,000 and 1,100 career boards in 71, 79, 89 and 100 games, respectively. The University of Connecticut alumna had her highest rebounding total of the season (22) against Atlanta on June 17, coming up just one rebound short of her career high (23). Charles is the all-time leader in rebounds per game (11.1) and also recorded the second highest single-season rebound total in league history (374) in 2011.
Minnesota Lynx guard Lindsay Whalen recorded 5.39 assists per game to edge out Seattle Storm guard Sue Bird (5.34 apg) to earn her second-straight Peak Performer Award in the category. Whalen dished out five or more assists in 22 games this season, with a season-high of 10 on June 9 against Tulsa. The University of Minnesota product ranks first in franchise history while ranking fourth in league history in both assists per game (5.1 apg) and total assists (1,525).
The three top honorees were also teammates in 2012 for Team USA at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, where the U.S. Women's Basketball Team took home their fifth-straight gold medal.
