December 21, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New York City FC News Release
New York City Football Club (NYCFC) today announced that Defender Kevin O'Toole has signed a contract extension through 2025 with an option for 2026.
The 25-year-old was selected in the Second Round of the 2022 MLS SuperDraft. Since being drafted O'Toole has gone on to make 34 appearances tallying over 2,000 minutes for the 'Boys in Blue.' O'Toole is the second NYCFC draftee to earn a contract extension with the Club.
Sporting Director David Lee said: "We're really happy that Kevin has signed a contract extension, and it is well deserved for his performances and development since he joined us. Kevin is proof that hard work and dedication pays off. He made a strong initial impression in preseason and it became clear to us early on that we had identified someone who had the potential to impact our First Team. It probably took him a little longer than he wanted to make his debut in 2022 but the performance he delivered in a Cup final, during Campeones Cup at Yankee Stadium showed how talented he is.
"He is a consummate professional who trains at maximum intensity every day and has developed his game enormously under the guidance of our coaching staff. It is a credit to him and how hard he has worked that he arrived to us having mostly played as an attacking player in college to then develop into a left wing-back role at the end of 2022 through our run to the Eastern Conference Final and then as a left-back in 2023.
"Growing up in the Tri-State area, Kevin understands what it means to represent this City and play in front of our fans. Since his arrival, he has been an active presence within the New York City community giving back to the next generation. We look forward to continuing to further Kevin's development and seeing him play a key role in our squad in the years ahead."
Selected as a Forward with the 34th pick overall in the second round of the 2022 MLS SuperDraft, O'Toole impressed in preseason making the First Team roster for the recently minted MLS Cup champions. O'Toole's emergence came under Head Coach Nick Cushing when he made the starting XI as a defender in the 2022 Campeones Cup 2-0 victory against Atlas FC of Mexico playing all 90 minutes. O'Toole went on to play every minute for the remainder of the season including the Club's run to the Eastern Conference Final.
Defender Kevin O'Toole said: "I am thrilled to continue my career at NYCFC. I'm so excited to play for a City that I call home, where I've had some great memories together with my teammates. To be able to represent this badge is truly an honor, I'm blessed to have signed another professional contract. It's the sport that I love and something that I always wanted to be doing, and I feel really lucky to do it for this City.
"We want the bad taste of last season to propel us well past the line. We have a great locker room, everyone is excited about the new season and feeling really confident.
"I feel like a New Yorker, growing up in the suburbs having fond memories in New York City with my family. When I'm around the fans I feel at home because that's the people I grew up with. I know what it's like to be a New York sports fan, the energy New Yorkers have is unrivaled and I just want them to feel proud of their Club and that's what our team hopes to do next season."
