Minnesota United FC News Release
GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Minnesota United announced today that the club has signed midfielder Wil Trapp to a new one-year contract, with a club option for 2025.
Minnesota United originally signed Trapp as a free agent in January 2021 following his single season with Inter Miami CF in 2020. The deep-lying midfielder has provided leadership for the Loons since joining the club, co-captaining the club for the past two seasons.
The Ohio native has made 98 game appearances with MNUFC across all competitions, having scored one goal and provided four assists, to-date. Trapp continued in his role as a mainstay in the Minnesota midfield during the 2023 MLS campaign, playing in 30 regular-season matches and making 37 game appearances across all competitions (including Leagues Cup and U.S. Open Cup fixtures).
Prior to joining Miami for their expansion year in 2020, Trapp spent his professional career with the Columbus Crew. During his time in Columbus, he was named an MLS All-Star in 2016, reached the 2015 MLS Cup final and was named the 2013 U.S. Soccer Young Male Athlete of the Year. Trapp represented Columbus Crew for seven seasons and made his professional debut for the club in 2013 at 20 years old. In total, Trapp has so far made 312 MLS game appearances (regular season and playoffs) throughout his 11-year career.
Internationally, Trapp has made 18 appearances for the United States Men's National Team since January 2018, appearing in the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup and international friendlies. He originally made his debut for the senior team in 2015, appearing in a friendly against Chile. His second international appearance came a year later in an international friendly against Canada. At the youth level, Trapp represented the U.S. U18, U20 and U23 teams. Notably, he appeared in both the 2013 Concacaf U-20 Championship and the 2013 U-20 FIFA World Cup. The team finished as runners-up in the 2013 Concacaf U20 Championship as Trapp played all 120 minutes of the final.
