New York City FC Signs Goalkeeper Tomás Romero
February 6, 2024 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New York City FC News Release
New York City FC have announced the signing of Tomás Romero. The El Salvadoran international goalkeeper is signed through 2024, with options to extend through 2026 and joins on a first-served basis after being waived by Toronto FC at the conclusion of the 2023 season.
The 23-year-old arrives in New York having made 24 career starts in Major League Soccer for LAFC and Toronto FC, tallying four clean sheets along the way. During his time with Toronto last season, Romero made six appearances. And at LAFC, Romero was part of the roster that won the Supporters Shield and MLS Cup in 2022.
"We are excited to welcome Tomás to New York to round out our goalkeeping group ahead of the new season," Sporting Director David Lee said. "Tomás is a talented goalkeeper with a strong resume for someone of his age, having already gained MLS and international experience with El Salvador. Tomás will add competition to an already strong core of goalkeepers at New York City FC and we're looking forward to helping him to continue to develop."
Romero made his international debut for El Salvador in a friendly against Ecuador in 2021. He's since earned 17 caps for his country, including representing El Salvador at the Concacaf Gold Cup.
During his soccer college career, Romero played for Georgetown University. The goalkeeper made the crucial championship winning penalty save that saw the Hoyas win the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship.
"New York City FC is an amazing club, and I'm excited to provide my talents and help the team any way I can," Goalkeeper Tomás Romero said. "I want to establish myself in the team. A big part of coming to a new club is that you need to gain the respect of your teammates. Luckily, I know a lot of the players in the team, having grown up playing with them.
"I hope to build on the international experience I've gained with El Salvador, having faced some of the biggest players in the world. I've been on winning teams in the past and I know that it takes a good group to do that. I really believe we have a good group here and can accomplish something special, and I will work hard everyday to help this team accomplish its goals."
The New Jersey native is joining up with his new teammates in California for the Coachella Valley Invitational, ahead of the new MLS season that begins later this month.
