New Mexico United News Release
Albuquerque, NM - Despite being reduced to nine men, New Mexico United prevailed with a 2-0 victory over reigning Eastern Conference champions Louisville City FC in a must-win match. The victory keeps United's hopes of qualifying for the 2023 USL Championship postseason alive.
United set the tempo in the first half, but at half an hour into proceedings, hadn't secured their breakthrough. That changed in the 32nd minute, when Harry Swartz hammered home from short range. Shanyder Borgelin received a pass in the center of the Lou City box and slotted to Swartz on the right, who fired low. The shot was deflected over Lou City goalkeeper Oliver Semmle for the game's first score. That score would hold through the remainder of the half.
Borgelin saw an early exit in this one. Already on a yellow in the 53rd minute, a high tackle saw him earn a second booking, reducing United to ten men. But that merely added fuel to the fire for them Black & Yellow, who buckled down on defense, and didn't allow a shot on goal for the remainder of the match.
In the 74th minute, United doubled their lead, as Nicky Hernandez took a through ball on the left side from Josh Suggs, turned and ran directly at goal, dribbling between two defenders, and firing high over Semmle for the second and final score of the match. Hernandez received a second yellow following his celebration, reducing United to 9 men for the remaining 13 minutes plus stoppage time.
Team defending won the day for New Mexico, as they continued to put in the work defensively, earning three points and staying alive in the hunt for the postseason.
United travel to Arizona for a Saturday night match-up with Phoenix Rising FC, in another must-win contest. They return home for the final home match of the season on Friday, October 13th against Memphis 901 FC.
