Windsor Spitfires News Release
Things were quiet. A little too quiet.
The Spits and Greyhounds were scoreless through 30 minutes at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste Marie on Friday night. Neither side was demonstrating any real advantage over the other.
But, very quickly, the Spits did what they're doing more than anyone: score goals.
Nick Czinder (2), Tom Kuhnhackl (34) and Taylor Carnevale (34) lit the lamp in a 3:10 span of the second period, as the Spitfires posted a 4-2 win.
Windsor has now scored the most goals in the OHL this season (248).
And here, it was Carnevale's, the eventual game winner, that broke the home side's back.
Shortly after Czinder opened the scoring at 12:42, after putting in some great spade work along the boards, Kuhnhackl and Carnevale struck on both halves of a long 5-on-3 advantage to quickly make it 3-0 Spits.
Ryan Ellis had three assists, giving him 298 career points. That moved him past Blair Barnes (296) for the second-most ever in Windsor Spitfires history.
Ellis will finish his brilliant junior career trailing only Bill Bowler (467) - a record that may never fall. He also heads into Sunday's game in Sudbury needing two points to pass Andre Benoit (299) for third all-time among OHL defencemen, trailing only Rick Corriveau (329), and Denis Potvin (330).
Vern Cooper beat starter John Cullen on the power play at 10:02 of the third, cutting the lead to 3-1. But the Hounds could only trade goals with the Spits from there.
Cullen surrendered just the one, before he was ejected, in his first game since suffering a mild concussion against Plymouth last week. Cully got involved with a Greyhound during a post-whistle scrum in front of the Windsor bench and was given a 10-minute misconduct along with six other players.
Stephen Johnston scored this other Windsor goal, his 19th of the season and third in two games.
Windsor will travel to Sudbury this Sunday for a matinee matchup against the Wolves. Game time is set for 2 pm, Spits fans can watch the game live on TVCOGECO or follow the action with Spitfires Play-by-Play Man Mike Miller on AM800.
