New Jersey Jackals News Release
The Jackals handed the Rockland Boulders their 12th straight loss Saturday, a 2-1 defeat on a pleasant mid-70s night at Provident Bank Park in Pomona, New York.
New Jersey clinched a playoff spot yesterday, so from here on out the focus is relaxing and tuning up.
Winning doesn't hurt either.
Mike Ness was great New Jersey. The former Newark Bears ace went seven innings and allowed just a Ryan Scoma solo home run in the fourth. Ness allowed just three hits and struck out six to improve to 2-0 with New Jersey, 10-2 in 2012.
Boulders starter Bobby Blevins was equally as impressive. The right hander allowed two runs, one earned, through six innings. He stuck out seven to only one walk. The tough-luck loss drops Blevins to 8-9.
Jackals closer Keith Cantwell allowed a lead off single to Scoma in the ninth. A de facto sacrifice by the following batter put Scoma in scoring position with one out, but Cantwell induced a Jon Smith fly out to right and a lazy foul out outside first by Billy Alvino. Cantwell is 15 for 16 in save opportunities this season.
Scoma was the offensive highlight for the Boulders - his 2-4 accounting for 50% of his team's hits.
Gaetano Giunta lead off the third with a single and would come around to score on an Angel Berroa double. Berroa would score later in the inning when Billy Alvino attempted to catch Bryan Sabatella stealing second. The throw would get away from the second baseman Ryan Mollica, allowing Berroa to score from third.
Sabatella's stolen base is his 40th of the season, tying him for the Jackals single-season record.
Berroa was back in the shortstop position for the first time since mid-July and responded with two doubles, including the run and RBI.
With the win the Jackals improve to 55-38. They remain 5 1/2 games back of Quebec coupled with thier 8-6 win over Worcester.
The Jackals and Capitales will play in the best-of-seven Can-Am championship series starting September 5th.
Tomorrow, the Jackals will face the Rockland Boulders for the final time in 2012. New Jersey will send out Steve Fox (11-3, 3.90). The Boulders will counter with southpaw and former major leaguer Gustavo Chacin (3-4, 5.59). First pitch tomorrow is at a special 5:05 Sunday start time. The pregame show begins 10 minutes prior.
The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2012 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
