Little Falls, NJ- The New Jersey Jackals made it eight straight victories, defeating the Bangor Lumberjacks, 6-3.
In the bottom half of the second, the Lumberjacks would tally two runs against Jackson Crowther. An RBI triple by Rolando Bello, and a sacrifice fly by Paul Powell, gave Bangor an early lead.
The Jackals would tally a run in the top of the third. A single by Zack Smithlin scored Juan Infante.
A three run homerun by Chris Rowan in the fourth inning, his 18th of the season, put the Jackals in front, 4-2.
Bangor would inch closer in the bottom of the fifth, with a Jose Garcia solo shot, making it 4-3 in favor of the Jackals.
A defensive miscue by Kaz Kohno on a routine fly ball to center, allowed Zack Smithlin and Juan Infante to score, with two outs. Through seven innings, the Jackals held a 6-3 advantage.
Bangor starter Isaac Pavlik lasted six and two third innings, giving up six runs, four of them earned, on seven hits, while fanning six. He received the loss.
Jackson Crowther got the win for the Jackals in seven innings of work. Crowther gave up three earned runs on seven hits, while walking two, and striking out seven. He won his sixth ballgame of the season. Fabricio Benitez closed the game out in the ninth inning, earning his eleventh save of the season.
For Bangor, Rolando Bello was 2-4 with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored.
For the Jackals, Zack Smithlin reached base three times, with two walks, and an RBI single. Wilton Veras went 2-4 with a double and a run scored.
New Jersey and Bangor play the middle game of their three-game set on Tuesday, August 10, 2004. New Jersey Jackals' shortstop Chris Rowan eclipsed the team record for homeruns as a member of the ballclub, on Friday, August 7, 2004. Rowan hit hs 29th as a member of the Jackals, and 17th of the 2004 season, eclipsing Travis Bailey's record of 28.
On Tuesday, August 3, 2004, Jackals' starting pitcher Aaron Myers was named the Rawlings Northeast League Player of the Month. Myers went 4-1 in the month of July, with a 1.06 ERA. In 34 innings of work, Myers scattered 29 hits while striking out 38. Also during the month, Myers tossed a complete game, seven inning shutout of the Elmira Pioneers, in which he struck out eleven batters. At the time of the award, Myers was second in the Northeast League in strikeouts with 75.
The game scheduled between the New Jersey Jackals and the Elmira Pioneers on Wednesday, August 4, 2004, was suspended due to rain, entering the bottom of the third inning. New Jersey held a 3-0 lead over Elmira, partially due to a two-run homerun by Jay LaFlair. Because of the rain, the Elmira grounds crew worked till after the scheduled start time to get the field playable. The game did not get underway till after 9:00 p.m. The game will be continued on Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at 5:00 p.m., at Yogi Berra Stadium. The first game will begin in the bottom of the third, and will go a full nine innings. The second contest will be seven innings
The New Jersey Jackals will be holding its 2nd annual NJ PETS Dog Days of Summer on Sunday, August 15, 2004, at Yogi Berra Stadium. It is an opportunity to bring your dog to the ballpark, participate in free giveaways, get portraits, and receive interesting literature on dog grooming provided by NJ PETS, Best Friend's Photography, and Mike's Feed Farm. The ballgame is scheduled to begin at 5:05 p.m., but those who arrive by 4:00 p.m. will have the opportunity to take their dog onto the field and participate in a pet tricks contest.
The Jackals will also be holding a blood drive at Yogi Berra Stadium, on Tuesday, August 17, 2004. A Bloodmobile will be located at the ballpark.
