Quebec's Emond and North Shore's Kelly tabbed players of the week

August 9, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

Durham, N.C. -- Quebec's Benoit Emond and North Shore's John Kelly were selected by SportsTicker as the Northeast League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Monday, Aug. 9 based upon their performances from Aug. 2 - 8. This is the third time Kelly has been chosen and first time Emond has been honored this season. It also marks the fourth time that Les Capitales and the Spirit have each had someone earn Player of the Week accolades.

Emond went 10-for-19 for a .526 batting average and among those hits were three doubles and a home run for a slugging percentage of .842. He drove in three and scored seven times for Quebec, which now leads the North Division with a record of 15-5. Emond is sixth in the league in hitting with a .328 average and ranks third in on-base percentage (.424) and fifth in hits (80). He is in his fourth season of professional baseball, all of which have been with Les Capitales.

Kelly, who earned Pitcher of the Week honors on June 27 and July 4, struck out a career-high 16 batters, one off the league record, in North Shore's 5-0 victory over Bangor on August 4. In that game, he went eight innings and allowed six hits, while walking two to pick up his eighth victory of the season. Kelly, who was selected to the 2004 All-Star Team, ranks first in the league in strikeouts (110), first in complete games (4), first in shutouts (3), third in wins (8) and fourth in earned run average (2.60). Originally selected by the New York Mets in the 11th round of the 1994 MLB Draft, Kelly also played with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Seattle Mariners, making it as high as Double-A Orlando in 1998. This is his third year in the Northeast League and second with North Shore.
