New Jersey Jackals News Release
In a back and forth ballgame, the Jackals weathered a late comeback attempt by the Surf, completing the sweep in Atlantic City with a 6-4 victory. The win improved New Jersey's record to 28-10, and made their lead over Quebec 3.5 games.
The Jackals wasted no time putting up a run on the scoreboard. After a leadoff single, Francisco Leandro advanced to second on a groundout, then to third on a passed ball, and eventually came into the score on an RBI groundout by Sandy Madera. But the Surf would score a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead. An RBI single by Lucas Taylor, and a sac fly by Ed Montague did the damage.
The score remained the same till the top of the sixth when the Jackals would re-take the lead. Zack Smithlin scored from third on a passed ball, and Wilton Veras uncorked a two-run homerun over the left field wall to give New Jersey a 4-2 advantage.
In the seventh, the Jackals added a huge insurance run when Smithlin singled into center with two outs, scoring Guillermo Reyes.
The Surf battled back in the bottom half of the seventh to come within a run. Lucas Taylor collected an RBI on a sac fly, and Anthony Granato drove in Atlantic City's fifth run on a groundout. After seven complete, the Jackals lead was down to 5-4.
Smithlin reached on an error in the top of the ninth by the shortstop Josh Renick, that allowed Clay Kuklick to score, providing the Jackals with a bit more room for error.
The win went to Mike Vicaro. It was his fourth consecutive win in just as many starts. Matt Scheuing suffered the loss. Rucky Tucker picked up his league leading 13th season of the season.
