WEEKLY WRAP-UP: The Cardinals went 4-2 last week, dropping the final two games of their series with Staten Island (New York Yankees) before sweeping the Aberdeen Ironbirds (Baltimore Orioles) over the weekend and taking the series opener from the Jamestown Jammers (Florida Marlins) on Tuesday. The club is riding a season-high 4-game winning streak. They are currently 15-15 on the season and in 4th place of the MacNamara Division of the New York-Penn League, 4.5 games behind division leading Brooklyn (New York Mets).
OF NOTE: The Cards and Staten Island Yankees played a marathon 17 inning, 4 hour and 45 minute contest on July 16 in what was supposed to have been the first game of a doubleheader&Instead, game 2 was suspended in the 6th because of curfew rules and will be completed the next time the Cards travel to Staten Island&During the 17-inning affair, the Cards set numerous club records&It was the longest game in franchise history, breaking the previous record of 16 innings set July 18, 1995 at Batavia, and featured 64 at-bats for the Cards, breaking the team record for at-bats in a game, and 61 for the Yankees, which broke the Cards team record for at-bats by an opponent&The Cards pitching staff set a franchise record with 21 strikeouts, breaking the previous record of 17&Three Cards players, Wes Swackhamer, Cody Palmer and Matt Shepherd, each recorded 8 at-bats to break the franchise record of 7.
BIRDS WITH BATS: The Cards are batting .250 as a team, 7th in the league&OF Steve Sherman has hit safely in each of his last 10 games with an official at-bat, going 12-for-41 (.293) during the streak&He has recorded at least one hit in 14 out of his last 15 games, batting .316 (18-for-57) over the span&SS Matt Shepherd had a Cards season-high 5 hits on July 16 at Staten Island&He broke a 5-game hitting streak, during which he batted .440 (11-for-25) on July 20&C Brady Toops has hit safely in each of his last 7 games with an at-bat, going 7-for-21 (.333) during the streak&1B Mike Ferris has hit safely in each of his last 8 games, going 11-for-33 over the stretch&OF Wes Swackhamer has hit safely in 8 of his last 9 games, batting .302 (13-for-43) over that time&The Cards have scored a season-high 9 runs in each of their past two games.
CARDINALS HURLERS: The Cards have a 4.53 team ERA, 13th in the league&RHP Mike Parisi was named NY-Penn League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 18&In his two starts, Parisi went 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA (13.0 IP, 3 ER) and held opposing batters to a .178 batting average&RHP Chris Bova made his 1st start of the season on July 20, picking up the win after pitching 5 innings and allowing 1 earned run&In the process he set a Cards season-high by stretching his scoreless innings streak to 10.2 innings pitched before allowing a run in the 4th&RHP Cory Doyne has not allowed a run in his last 7.1 innings, a streak which dates to July 3 and spans 6 appearances&RHP Michael Sillman has pitched 6.1 consecutive scoreless innings, dating to July 3&RHP Jeremy Zick has not allowed a run over his last 8.1 innings pitched&Since July 13, the bullpen has recorded a 1.16 ERA (38.2 IP, 5 ER) in 7 games and has not allowed more than 1 earned run in any of those games.
THE WEEK AHEAD: The Cards continue their five-game home stand tonight at 7:15 pm with game two of their three-game set with Jamestown and then play the finale of their series with the Jammers on Thursday. On Friday, the Williamsport Crosscutters (Pittsburgh Pirates) make their first trip of the season to Skylands Park when the clubs open up a two-game set. Tonight, New Jersey Hand Surgery sponsors a batting glove giveaway, Thursday, Miller Lite and The New Jersey Herald sponsor the second installment of the Miller Lite Bat Bonanza and Friday night is fireworks night courtesy of Condit Toyota and The Star Ledger. Saturday night, Franklin Sussex Auto Mall and the New Jersey Herald sponsor a Monster Truck Crush, it is Knights of Columbus night, and post-game is Family Catch on the Field and Girl Scout Sleepover Night.
