June 30, 2008 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution - currently the top team in all of Major League Soccer - will begin defense of its U.S. Open Cup title on Tuesday, July 1, when the club hosts the Richmond Kickers of the United Soccer Leagues' Second Division in the third round of the 2008 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at 7 p.m. at Veterans Stadium in New Britain, Conn. A live audio broadcast of the match will be available at www.revolutionsoccer.net.
The meeting will be the first-ever between the Revolution (9-4-3, 30 pts. in MLS) and the Kickers (6-4-2, 20 pts. in USL-2), though the Richmond side will have a familiar face in former Rev Luke Vercollone, who spent the 2004 and 2005 seasons in Foxborough.
New England is 9-6-2 all-time in the competition and won the 2007 U.S. Open Cup, the club's first-ever cup championship. The Revs defeated fellow MLS side FC Dallas in the final at Pizza Hut Park, 3-2, on Oct. 3 of last year.
In the club's most recent MLS match, the Revolution returned to the win column with a 2-1 victory over Toronto FC behind a pair of goals from Steve Ralston. With the win, New England head coach Steve Nicol and his staff earned the honor of coaching the MLS All-Stars against English Premier League side West Ham United on July 24 at BMO Field in Toronto.
