New England Revolution Midfielder Clint Dempsey Suspended and Fined

NEW YORK (Aug. 15, 2006) - The Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee today suspended New England Revolution midfielder Clint Dempsey for two games and fined him $1,000 for violent conduct in the Revolution's 0-0 tie versus the Kansas City Wizards on Wednesday, Aug. 9.

Dempsey's suspension and fine were imposed for violent conduct against Wizards defender Jimmy Conrad. The play occurred in the 57th minute when Dempsey and Conrad jumped for a head ball in midfield and Dempsey's elbow struck Conrad in the face. Dempsey's suspension is scheduled to be served over the next two games. The Revolution face the Chicago Fire at home on Sunday, Aug. 20 and the Columbus Crew at home on Sunday, Aug. 27.

Under the terms of the CBA agreement, the Players Union may submit an appeal to the Commissioner for any discipline imposed as a result of an on-field incident resulting in a fine $750 or higher and/or a suspension of two games or more. Upon receipt of the appeal, the Commissioner will designate a time and a place for a hearing to be held as soon as practicable following receipt by the League of the Union's notice of appeal. A suspension shall not be postponed pending appeal.
