New Britain Rock Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - New Britain hammered out 14 hits on the night and scored seven runs in the second inning to rout Harrisburg, 10-3 on Friday night before a sellout crowd of 7,738 at New Britain Stadium.
The Rock Cats (32-21) are off to their best start in franchise history and with the fourth-straight win are now 11 games over the .500 mark for the first time since the 2001 season.
It was the Senators who took an early 1-0 lead when Tim Pahuta muscled a solo shot over the right field wall to leadoff the second inning. The lead was short-lived, however, with the Rock Cats retaliating with seven runs in the bottom of the inning.
Matt Rizzotti started the bottom of the second off with a double and moved to third on a passed ball. Deibinson Romero then doubled to left to score Rizzotti and tie the game. With one out, Evan Bigley singled to put runners at the corners. James Beresford, Rene Tosoni and Aaron Hicks delivered consecutive RBI singles. Chris Colabello added a two-out RBI single that knocked in Tosoni and bring Rizzotti to the plate again. Rizzotti drilled his second double of the inning into left field to plate two more runs and put the `Cats on top, 7-1.
In the third, the Senators scored on an RBI bunt single by Jose Lozada. The Rock Cats answered back in the bottom of the inning. Tosoni delivered an RBI single to right that scored Beresford.
Tosoni, who last played with the Rock Cats in 2010, finished the night 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI in his fifth game - and first at New Britain Stadium - since returning to the team from Rochester. Bigley added a two-run homer in the seventh inning to tie a season-high in runs scored.
Rock Cats starter Steve Hirschfeld labored through the second, but managed to escape with just the home run allowed that inning. Hirschfeld (4-4) settled down to limit the Senators to two runs as he scattered nine hits in seven innings. He walked none while striking out two. Blake Martin added a scoreless ninth.
Pahuta added a second homer in the eighth - a two-run shot off of relief man Bobby Lanigan.
Jeff Mandel (4-4) was hammered for 10 runs on 14 hits in 6 1/3 innings to suffer the loss.
ALLSTATE PLAYER OF THE GAME: DH Matt Rizzotti went 2-for-4 with two doubles in the second inning - including a double that started off the seven-run inning and a two-run double - and scored a run.
