New Britain Grabs Game From Barnstormers
A stubborn New Britain Bees squad scrapped and fought all the way to what would have been the final out on Wednesday evening.
Instead of that final out, Jason Rogers flared a broken bat single over the head of shortstop Vladimir Frias in the top of the ninth to score the tying run, and Vinny Siena added a two-run homer in the tenth as the Bees handed the host Lancaster Barnstormers a 7-5 setback at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
With the defeat, the Barnstormers remained four games ahead of Sugar Land in the Freedom Division race.
Lancaster led, 5-3, heading into the top of the ninth and went to closer Matt Reynolds, who had converted all 10 of his previous save tries. Siena led off with a single, and James Skelton drew a walk on a full count pitch. Darren Ford moved both runners ahead with a bunt to third, and Reid Brignac brought the Bees within a run with a sacrifice fly to right. A bad pickoff throw to second by catcher Anderson De La Rosa allowed Skelton to take third.
The Barnstormers pitched to Rogers, and Reynolds worked ahead in the count. Rogers got enough of the 1-2 offering to loop it past Frias to drive home the tying run.
Jamar Walton led off the tenth with a single to right off Matt Marksberry (0-1). Lancaster caught a break after third baseman Tyler Bortnick bobbled a bunt by Ozney Guillen when Walton fell around second base and was tagged out by Frias. However, Siena knocked a 3-2 offering onto the Haller picnic deck for the 7-5 lead.
Lancaster had built a 5-1 lead over the first four innings. After a run scored on a throwing error in the second, Rico Noel made it 2-1 with a sacrifice fly to left. In the fourth, the Barnstormers struck for three two-out runs. Frias singled, and Darian Sandford followed with a bunt base hit. The pair pulled off a double steal to move into scoring position. Noel beat out a scratch single to knock home one run, and Blake Gailen scorched a single into right for a 4-1 lead. After Ryan Casteel was hit by a pitch, Kyle Simon uncorked a wild pitch to give the Barnstormers the four-run margin.
Rogers, who is 6-for-9 in the series, tripled home a pair of runs in the fifth to draw New Britain closer.
Devin Burke (1-0) threw two scoreless innings for the win. Evan Scribner survived a Frias double in the tenth for his fourth save.
The two clubs wrap up the series on Thursday evening with Tommy Shirley (3-1) on the hill for Lancaster against Rainy Lara (2-2). Fans may tune into Blue Ridge Cable 11 or the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 7:00.
