SAINT JOHN, March 14, 2006 - The Saint John Sea Dogs have set a new Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) attendance record for expansion franchises.

With two games yet to be played in their first season, the Sea Dogs have drawn 146,535 fans to Harbour Station in 33 contests. That total shatters the previous high of 134,371 fans established by the expansion Halifax Mooseheads in 1994-05 in 36 games played.

The Sea Dogs attendance this year places Saint John in third place in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) record book for expansion franchises. The Tacoma Rockets of the WHL drew 172,315 in 1991-92 while the Red Deer Rebels of the WHL attracted 165,230 in 1992-93. Both teams played 36 games.

"We expect that more than 155,000 fans will have attended a Sea Dogs game this year when we conclude our first season on Sunday," said David Turk, executive director of the hockey club. "This outstanding support underscores the fact that we have some of the most loyal hockey fans anywhere."

The Sea Dogs return to action tomorrow (March 15) when they will face the Acadie-Bathurst Titan in a 7 p.m. start. Annual player awards will be handed out.

Then, on Sunday at 4 p.m., the Sea Dogs will meet their cross-border rivals, the Lewiston MAINEiacs, in the final game of the 2005-06 season. It's fan appreciation day and there'll be lots of prizes given out. There will also be a ceremony to recognize the club's four overage players who will not be returning next year.
