Frederick Keys News Release
The Keys had a tough time on Saturday night getting any hits against Winston-Salem starting pitcher, RHP Dylan Axelrod. Axelrod allowed just one run on three hits as he tossed a career-high eight innings in the Dash, 6-1, win over Frederick. With the loss, the Keys fell to 20-21.
Winston-Salem was the first to strike on the evening. With LHP Nathan Moreau on the mound and 1B Seth Loman on first for the Dash, C Josh Phegley belted a towering blast to rightfield for a two-run homerun. The Phegley shot was just his first homer of the 2010 season. He was the 38th overall pick in the 2009 draft out of Indiana University.
Dylan Axelrod retired the first seven Keys batters he faced before giving up a double to 2B Bobby Stevens. While Stevens was on second, Axelrod threw a pitch in the dirt and Stevens alertly advanced to third base on the wild pitch. Now with Stevens on third, C Brian Ward grounded out to third base but it was deep enough to bring home Stevens and to cut their deficit to one run.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Winston-Salem had two men on and two out with LF Kenny Williams Jr. at the plate. Moreau dealt a 2-2 fastball that looked like it was strike three. However it was called a ball and Williams Jr. hit a two-run double down the line on the next pitch to give the Dash a 4-1 lead. After surrendering a RBI single to CF Brandon Short, Moreau was relieved by LHP Nate Nery. Moreau allowed five runs on six hits while striking out two and walking one on the evening.
The Keys could not muster anymore runs against Dylan Axelrod as he finished up the evening allowing just one run on three hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Over his last three starts, Axelrod has given up just two runs over 25 innings pitched. Axelrod improved to 6-2 with the victory while Nathan Moreau fell to 3-2 with Frederick in 2010.
In relief, Nate Nery allowed just one run on two hits over 4.1 innings pitched.
Frederick and Winston-Salem will play the series finale on Sunday afternoon from BB&T Ballpark. RHP Oliver Drake (2-6, 4.84) will start for the Keys while the Dash will send RHP Nate Jones (8-4, 4.45) to the hill. First pitch is set from 2:00 p.m. from BB&T Ballpark with coverage starting at 1:40 p.m. on the Frederick Keys Baseball Network.
The Keys return home on Friday, August 13 for NFL Night at Harry Grove Stadium. Fans who wear a NFL jersey to the game will receive $2 off their ticket. For tickets call 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at www.frederickkeys.com.
