Salem, VA - Adam Frost blasted a two-out three-run homer to put the Wilmington Blue Rocks (54-58, 22-20) ahead to stay in a 4-1 defeat of the Salem Red Sox (64-46, 22-18) on Saturday night. Manauris Baez (2-4) pitched well for his first victory as a starter, while Caleb Clay (4-11) took the outright league lead in losses. The win gives the Blue Crew a chance at a split of the four-game set.

Both starters dominated until an infield hit, a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases against Baez in the home fourth. While Ryan Dent's single to left put Salem ahead 1-0, Baez rebounded by striking out Drew Dominguez looking to leave the bases loaded and strike out the side. That started a string of nine straight Red Sox retired by the righty.

Clay faced just two over the minimum entering the seventh, retiring a Blue Rock on two pitches or less seven times. Wil Myers began the seventh with a bloop hit to right-center. Ernesto Mejia followed with a first-pitch groundout to second. While the bouncer appeared to be a tailor-made double-play ball, Dominguez bobbled his initial fielding try and settled for a single out at first.

Nick Francis followed with a bloop hit to right-center before Perez tied the game with his third of four hits on the night. Rey Navarro dropped down a sac bunt to put the runners at second and third for Frost. On a 2-2 pitch, Frost fouled a ball back that prompted prospect catcher Tim Federowicz to stare at his bare throwing hand. After a chat with athletic trainer Brandon Henry and manager Kevin Boles, Federowicz was lifted from the game in favor of Dan Butler. On the next pitch, Frost smashed his fourth homer of the year over the left-field fence.

A two-out infield hit by Dominguez in the bottom of the seventh chased Baez as the Blue Rocks brought Kevin Chapman in from the bullpen. A wild pitch gave Dominguez second, but Mitch Dening flied out to left to end the inning.

Chapman retired the first two men of the eighth before issuing a four-pitch walk to Will Middlebrooks and giving up a single to Alex Hassan. Closer Barry Bowden entered and walked Butler on four straight offerings to load the bases. Jon Hee then popped a ball into shallow right close to the foul line. Francis raced in from right, Mejia sprinted out from first, but neither could get to it. Instead, Navarro from second in full stride made an impressive over-the-shoulder snare in forcing the Sox to leave the bases loaded for a second time.

Bowden hurled a 1-2-3 ninth with a strikeout of Dening to end the game while posting his team-leading 10th save.

The four-game set concludes on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. Two-time first-round pick Aaron Crow (0-1, 8.53) makes his second Blue Rocks start against the CL's Player of the Month in May, right-hander Brock Huntzinger (7-6, 4.02).
