Mississippi RiverKings News Release
(Oklahoma City, OK) - Jeff Nelson's unassisted goal early in the final period gave the Mississippi RiverKings a 2-1 victory at Oklahoma City on Saturday, January 3rd. Mississippi won its fourth straight victory, and moved into second place in the Central Hockey League's Northeast Division standings, just two points behind the front-running Blazers.
The four game winning streak is the team's longest win skein of the year.
Oklahoma City opened the scoring late in the first period, when Chad Hinz lifted a shot under the cross bar past RiverKings' goaltender Kevin Beech with 21 seconds left in the first period for a 1-0 OKC lead after twenty minutes of play.
Louis Dumont answered for the RiverKings in the second period with a power play at the 9:19 mark of the session. Dumont banged in a rebound of his own first shot past Oklahoma City goalie Doug Groenestege. Derek Landmesser earned an assist on the goal.
Nelson's game-winning goal came when the puck came out of a battle along the side wall to Nelson in front of the Oklahoma City net. Nelson's backhanded shot beat Groenestege at the 5:18 mark of the third period for a 2-1 lead, which became the final score. It was Nelson's tenth goal of the season and his tenth point in his last six games.
Mississippi was 1-for-4 on the power play, while Oklahoma City was scoreless in five power play chances. The Blazers out shot the RiverKings for the game by a 36-25 margin.
With the victory, Mississippi is 20-11-0 for the season for 40 points. The Blazers fell to 19-8-4 for 42 points.
The RiverKings' brief road trip concludes Tuesday night at Bossier-Shreveport before the team returns home to play the Tulsa Oilers on Friday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. For ticket information, contact the RiverKings offices at 662-342-1755 or email tickets@riverkings.com.
