Rage Begin '09 on a Winning Note

January 3, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rocky Mountain Rage News Release

Rio Rancho, N.M. - The Rocky Mountain Rage kicked off the New Year with a resounding 6-3 victory against the New Mexico Scorpions on the road at the Santa Ana Star Center. Five different players scored, including Kai Magnussen who had two on the evening, as the team matched its season-high goal output on the strength of three power play markers.

It was the Scorpions who took the early lead, though, with a five-on-three power play goal from Torren Delforte just 1:43 into the game. After some more pressure from New Mexico through the first half of the frame, the Rage wrested away control of the game on the power play. Awarded five consecutive opportunities on the man advantage over the final half of the period, Rocky Mountain cashed in power play tallies from Magnussen at 14:07, Scott Wray at 17:04, and David Morelli at 19:34 to take a 3-1 edge to the second.

The Rage continued to build their advantage in the middle frame when Magnussen scored the eventual game-winner off a rebound at 5:42. Daymen Rycroft then scored short-handed at 12:40, tying Aaron Davis for the team lead with 12 goals on the year. Nathan O'Nabigon made it a 6-1 game when he pounded home a rebound at 16:57.

New Mexico threatened to make things interesting in the third with a short-handed goal from Neil Trimm at 2:28 and an even strength tally from Seth Leonard at 6:49 to cut the margin to 6-3 but drew no closer.

The Rage swept the three games of the teams' season series on the Scorpions' home ice, which concludes next week with a pair at Broomfield Event Center when the clubs battle on Jan. 7 and 9.

The victory lifts Rocky Mountain back to .500 at 14-14-2 on the season with 30 points, keeping the team in second place in the Northwest Division three points ahead of the Rapid City Rush.

The Rage now begin a stretch where they will play 12 of the next 13 games at Broomfield Event Center. The home-heavy slate kicks-off tomorrow against the Amarillo Gorillas at 7:05 p.m. and continues on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. against the Rush.
