Tampa Tarpons News Release
TAMPA, Fla.- Right-handers Nick Nelson and Miguel Yajure combined for 15 strikeouts, and Dermis Garcia drove in all four runs as the Tarpons blanked the Marauders, 4-0, to clinch the weekend series on Saturday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
It was the third shutout win for Tampa (23-31) and the third time this season Tarpons' pitchers have had 15 strikeouts in a game, last doing so in a 6-1 win against Bradenton (31-23) on 4/17.
The Marauders were held to four hits, three of which came in the first inning against Nelson. Travis Swaggerty lined a single to center but was caught stealing. One out later, Chris Sharpe and Robbie Glendinning reached on back-to-back singles, but Nelson struck out Lucas Tancas to strand the pair.
For the second-straight game, Tampa opened the scoring in the first inning. After RHP Nicholas Economos struck out the first two batters, Oswaldo Cabrera kept the inning alive with a line drive single to right. Garcia followed by drilling a double off the base of the left field wall, scoring Cabrera for a 1-0 lead.
Nelson retired six-straight batters before stranding a two-out single in the third. Tancas drew a walk in the fourth and, with two outs, Yajure entered in relief and struck out Dylan Busby.
Added off the Double-A Trenton 7-Day Injured List prior to the game, Nelson tallied seven strikeouts in three and two-third innings, scattering four hits and a walk while throwing 44 of 67 pitches for strikes in his first game action since 4/14 with the Thunder.
Tampa threatened against Economos in the third when Pablo Olivares and Isiah Gilliam lined back-to-back, one-out singles, but Gilliam was tagged out rounding first base. Cabrera reached on a hit-by-pitch, but Garcia grounded out to end the frame.
Economos (L, 1-2) retired 13 of the final 15 batters he faced while completing his second-straight start of seven innings. The 23-year-old allowed one earned run on six hits, one walk and one hit-batter, throwing 53 of 91 pitches for strikes in a quality start.
The Tarpons added insurance off RHP Ryan Valdez in the eighth when Olivares singled, Cabrera walked, and Garcia smashed a three-run homer over the wall in right-center - his second home run in as many nights.
Yajure (W, 3-6) held the Marauders hitless for the final five and a third innings, yielding a pair of walks while tying his season-high with eight strikeouts on 73 pitches (50 strikes). It was the 21-year-old's first relief appearance since 2016.
Garcia (2-for-4, HR, 2B, 4RBI, R) tied a career-high with 4 RBI and now leads the Florida State League with 13 HR, 39 RBI and 22 XBH. Cabrera (1-for-2, BB, HBP, 2R) reached base three times and is batting .368 (7-for-19) over his last five games. Omar Carrizales (3-for-4, CS, PO) paced the offense with his third-straight multi-hit game, batting .583 (7-for-12) in that span.
The series concludes with a Sunday matinee at 1:00 p.m. RHP Max Kranick (3-5, 4.84) is slated to start for Bradenton, with Tampa's starting pitcher TBA. Live play-by-play of the action will be available on the Tampa Tarpons Baseball Network.
