North Carolina Courage News Release
Cary, NC - The North Carolina Courage return to action one week after clinching the 2019 NWSL Shield on Saturday, September 28 at 7 p.m. against the Washington Spirit. The Courage will look to extend their six-game winning streak as they prepare for postseason play.
The match will be the NC Courage's last road trip of the season as they finish off their regular season at home on October 12 against Sky Blue FC. The team will then host a playoff game on October 20. With Sahlen's Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park hosting the NWSL Championship, the Courage would also have home-field advantage if they advance to the final.
Most recently, the Courage defeated the Utah Royals 3-0 behind goals from Sam Mewis, Jaelene Hinkle, and Debinha. Mewis scored first on a penalty kick earned by her teammate Kristen Hamilton. Hinkle followed with a goal in the second half and her first goal in a Courage uniform with a shot from the left-back position. Debinha scored the final goal of the match after Crystal Dunn intercepted a pass near the box and slotted it to the Brazilian midfielder.
Stephanie Labbé earned her eighth clean sheet of 2019 with the shutout against Utah. Labbé is currently in second place in the NWSL in clean sheets, trailing only Nicole Barnhart of Utah Royals FC who has 10. The Canadian goalkeeper has made 32 saves in her first season with the Courage.
The Washington Spirit tied the Houston Dash 0-0 in a midweek game on Wednesday night. Before that match, the Spirit fell to the Chicago Red Stars 3-1. Mallory Pugh scored Washington's goal in the match.
