Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release

Naturals pitching coach Larry Carter has been selected as the 2008 Mike Coolbaugh Texas League Coach of the Year, league president Tom Kayser announced today.

Carter has been working with Royals prospects in the Texas League for eight seasons, having spent seven seasons as the pitching coach for the Wichita Wranglers prior to the team's move to Springdale. He was selected as the second winner of the award by a vote of league executives, managers and broadcasters.

The longest tenured pitching coach in the league, Carter has helped in the development of a long list of pitchers for the Royals, such as Zach Greinke and Luke Hochevar. During his tenure in the league, which began in Wichita in 2001, Carter has mentored pitchers who have helped their team qualify for post-season play in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2006, and continue to be in the playoff hunt in 2008.

A former Texas League pitcher and a Corinth, Texas resident, Carter has quickly become a favorite with fans in Northwest Arkansas. He is known as a jovial character that jokes with fans and staff, contributing every day to the friendly atmosphere at Arvest Ballpark.

The award is named in honor of former Tulsa Drillers coach Mike Coolbaugh who died in August 2007 after having been struck by a foul ball during a game in North Little Rock. The award was established to honor, each year, a Texas League coach who represents baseball, both on and off the field, with the same passion and integrity demonstrated by Mike Coolbaugh.

The award to Carter follows the inaugural award, given last season to Frisco coach Scott Coolbaugh.
