Tulsa Drillers News Release
August 26, 2008 - The Tulsa Drillers stopped a couple of streaks with a 4-2 win over the Springfield Cardinals Tuesday night at Hammons Field. The win snapped a 4-game losing streak for the Drillers and ended a 5-game winning streak for the Cardinals.
The game opened a season-ending, 7-game road trip for the Drillers, while the loss dropped the Cards one game behind Northwest Arkansas in the North Division standings of the Texas League.
Tulsa got another strong outing from starting pitcher Brandon Hynick. The right-hander allowed only three hits in seven shutout innings. He walked only one hitter and struck out four.
The win was the third straight for Hynick and improved his season record to 10-7. He lowered his ERA to 4.44 in what was his final appearance of the year.
Ryan Mattheus recorded the final four outs to pick up his fourth save of the season.
The Drillers never trailed in the game and scored single runs in four straight innings. They opened the scoring in the third as Brian Esposito singled and scored on a base hit by Eric Young Jr.
Tulsa doubled its lead in the fourth when Chris Nelson doubled in front of a run-scoring single by Jeff Kindel.
Justin Nelson and Tony Blanco belted solo home runs to up the lead to 4-0. Nelson hit his 18th homer to lead off the fifth, while Blanco hit his 23rd of the year with one out in the sixth.
When Hynick departed, the Cards made things interesting in the eighth inning. Daniel Descalso's two-out single off Adam Bright scored James Rapoport to end the shutout. Andrew Johnston replaced Bright and uncorked a wild pitch and issued a walk before Brett Wallace doubled home Rapoport to make it 4-2.
The Drillers called on Mattheus and he walked Donovan Solano to load the bases before retiring Brandon Yarbrough on a ground out to end the threat. The closer struck out the side in the ninth to end the game.
Tulsa and Springfield will play game two of their four-game series Wednesday night at 7:10PM. Josh Hall (0-1, 14.04 ERA) will pitch for the Drillers against Justin Fiske (3-0, 3.47 ERA) of the Redbirds.
