Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Tulsa Drillers snapped their own four-game losing streak, ending the Springfield Cardinals' five-game winning streak in the process, as the Drillers beat the Redbirds by a score of 4-2 on Tuesday night at Hammons Field. Couple the Cardinals' loss with Northwest Arkansas' 4-3 win over Arkansas, and the Cards are now a game back of the Naturals with just six to play in the regular season.
Tulsa starter Brandon Hynick (10-7) was dominating, allowing just three hits over seven scoreless innings to earn the win.
The Drillers chipped away at Springfield starter Kyle Mura (3-4), getting a single run in four straight innings.
Eric Young's RBI single in the third put Tulsa up 1-0. Jeff Kindel's two-out single in the fourth scored Chris Nelson to give the Drillers a 2-0 lead. Justin Nelson homered in the fifth and Tony Blanco went yard in the sixth, as Tulsa made it a 4-0 advantage.
Springfield got to the Tulsa bullpen, after Hynick departed after seven innings. Daniel Descalso and Brett Wallace each drove home a run with a hit in the last of the eighth, as Springfield cut the deficit to 4-2. Ryan Mattheus was then brought in from the bullpen and immediately walked Donovan Solano to load the bases. Mattheus recovered though, getting Brandon Yarbrough on a force-out to end the threat.
Trailing 4-2 in the ninth, Jim Rapaport reached with a one-out single. Mattheus again worked out of it, striking out both Andrew Brown and Daryl Jones to end the game and record his 16th save of the year.
Springfield (37-27) is now one game back of Northwest Arkansas in the North Division. Justin Fiske (3-0) will head to the hill for the Redbirds on Wednesday, taking on Tulsa right-hander Josh Hall (1-0). Wednesday night is Missouri Lottery Scratchers Giveaway Night, as 1,000 fans 18 and older will receive a free Missouri Lottery Scratchers Ticket. Game time on Wednesday is 7:10pm and gates open at 6:10pm. Don't forget that the regular season finale at Hammons Field is on Friday, as the 2008 campaign concludes with a ton of great giveaways and an AM Pyrotechnics Fireworks Display! Tickets are available for the final home stand of the regular season by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
