Springfield Cardinals News Release
Northwest Arkansas pounded out a total of 14 hits, handing Trey Hearne his first loss since May 1st, as they defeated the Springfield Cardinals by a score of 6-2, on Saturday night at Hammons Field.
Hearne (10-2), who had won six straight starts and nine straight decisions, allowed five runs on 13 hits over 5 1/3 innings.
Springfield on the other hand, couldn't get much going offensively, as Tyler Henley provided the Redbirds with their only run, as his second-inning homer put the Cards on the board at 1-0. The long ball for Henley is his ninth of the year.
The Naturals got to Hearne for a run in the third, two in the fourth and then two in the sixth. Jeff Bianchi's RBI single tied the game at 1-1 in the third. Cody Strait and Cody Clark each drove in a run in the fourth, putting the Naturals in front 3-1.
Clark and Marc Maddox each drove in a run in the sixth, making it 5-1 and chasing Hearne.
Sam Freeman coaxed a double-play ball out of Ed Lucas, but gave up a solo homer in the seventh to Corey Smith, as the Naturals made it 6-2.
Reliever Gilbert de la Vara (5-1), who took over for Blake Johnson in the fifth, worked into the eighth inning. After giving up a lead-off double to Colt Sedbrook, he struck out Jim Rapoport for the first out of the eighth. The left-hander would give way to Greg Holland, who struck out Khalil Greene for the second out, but allowed a two-out RBI single to Shane Peterson, as the Cards rounded out the scoring at 6-2.
Greene, in his second game as part of his current rehab assignment, made a number of great defensive plays at third base, finishing offensively with one hit in four at-bats.
The Cards and Naturals battle in the final game of the series on Sunday evening. David Kopp (1-1) takes on Naturals' lefty Everett Teaford (3-3) at 6:10pm. Sunday is "Pink in the Park" Day at Hammons Field, as Rick's Automotive will be giving away 2,500 Pink Cardinals Caps to fans in attendance. Come help us raise awareness for Breast Cancer, as well as funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks. Gates open at 5:10pm and tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at springfieldcardinals.com.
