What's Up with the Booster Club

After a month, how's it going

The Potomac Nationals Booster Club was hard at work getting ready for the season and finding places for some of the players to stay the last time we heard about them. Now, we'll take a look at how the first month of the season has gone for them.

With the number of players coming in, it was a daunting task to get everyone a place to stay and as of the first of the month, everyone is either in a house or an apartment. The players are getting acclimated to the area, finding restaurants, movie theatres and other places to visit. That is when they're not on the road against other Carolina League teams.

On Sunday, following the Nationals 5-1 victory over the Frederick Keys, the Booster Club held a meeting at the stadium and voted on the players of the month of April. When the votes are tallied and awards are set, they will be presented to the players prior to the Nationals game on May 13.

The Booster Club has also begun preparations for presenting Booster Cookies to players celebrating birthdays during the season. There are two slated for the month of May, but with roster moves that could change. In addition to the Birthday Cookie, the players also receive a gift pack that is organized by Bill Annetti.

The first Saturday night of the home season came during the last home stand with Hope and Steve Stephens sponsoring the meal of King Ranch Chicken prepared by the wonderful Brenda Wyant.

During games, the Booster Club will be selling buttons of the players to help raise money to support the players throughout the season. Dottie Boone took the pictures of the players with the buttons being made this week while the team is on the road.

So with all of the activity going on with the team on the field, there is an awful lot going on off the field as well! For more on the Potomac Nationals Booster Club, visit their web site at www.PotomacNationalsBoosterClub.com

On-Field Promotions

Try to win something with everyone watching

There is nothing like hearing your name called out over the P. A. system at a ballgame--unless you've lost your wallet or child--because it means that you are going to have the chance to win prizes.

For years, the P-Nats organization has had a bevy of on-field and in-game contests to thrill the fans. From having fans quack like a duck to putting a golf ball on the dugout, the variety of contests has always been one to watch.

This season, the Nationals host several on-field contests with the first one of the night usually being the Commerce Bank Race Uncle Slam contest. One lucky youngster is chosen to go on the field and attempt to beat Uncle Slam around the bases. With the young man or lady starting at first and the big-footed Uncle Slam at second, it's literally a foot race to see who wins, most of the time.

To keep Uncle Slam motivated, the team shows his record on the scoreboard after the race is over. Winless through just over a season's worth of races, Uncle Slam still tries his hardest to take home the Commerce Bank prize.

Ameriprise Financial Services then puts two contestants against each other in the Retirement Nest Egg Race. The two contestants get dizzy, and then have to deliver their nest eggs safely into their savings baskets. The contest to get their eggs in first wins but both have to watch out for Uncle Slam who tends to get in the way on occasion.

This new on-field contest has started to catch on in popularity fairly quickly with the antics of the dizzy contestants having to battle Uncle Slam for a great prize from Ameriprise Financial Services.

As the game progresses, the Fat Punks Chicken Wing Toss gives a fan the chance to win a terrific prize package including a gift certificate to Fat Punks Restaurant in Manassas Park. If the contestant flings three wings into the hoop coop on the ground, they'll win that prize package.

The Fat Punks Chicken Wing Toss is in it's sophomore season and just as popular as it was when it debuted. There's just something about those wings flying through the air. Uncle Slam had to stop helping during this contest, because he wanted to eat the wings.

Hilton Grand Vacations is on for their first season in Potomac and plans on giving away a vacation package every Saturday night home game. All the contestant has to do is put the ball through the hole in the Hilton Grand Vacations sign to win.

This contest isn't just for Saturdays, it happens every night with a great prize package to be given away.

This doesn't mean that the P-Nats only have four ways to win. There are tons of other great prizes to be given away during games and you'll be able to find out more about those in the next E-Newsletter.

May 12, Internet Safety Night

Integrated Digital Systems brings back popular night

Integrated Digital Systems and the Virginia State Police are bringing back Internet Safety Night during the 2006 season on May 12 when the Nationals take on Myrtle Beach. This popular night gives away a notebook computer to one lucky youngster, while helping both parents and children stay safe while surfing on the Internet.

The event, which is co-sponsored by the Virginia State Police offers parents the opportunity to get information on how to protect their children from dangers on the internet. Children also learn safe ways to navigate the internet and what to do in the event someone asks them where they live, tries to get phone numbers or if a stranger asks them to meet somewhere.

Prizes will be given away all throughout the game including the notebook computer, however the children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to be eligible for the prizes.

April Sun Brings May Fun

Now, we play ball and really have some fun!

The sun shone brightly on 'The Pfitz' in April, save for opening night, but in the end, over 16,000 fans experienced just a part of the fun of Potomac Nationals baseball.

In the month of May, the Potomac Nationals make history when they play in the first ever Major League/Minor League doubleheader in Washington D. C. following the Washington Nationals game with Baltimore on May 21.

Along with Internet Safety Night presented by IDS, you'll also find Youth League Day where all local young athletes are invited to wear their team's uniform or jersey to receive a free Grandstand ticket. Any athletic group of 20 or more will receive a discounted rate on Reserved tickets and receive their name in lights on the video board during Youth League Day. This means that if you play ice hockey, soccer, football, lacrosse, any sport, you can come to the game free for wearing your uniform!

Let's take a look at what's going on when the Nationals return from the road:

Tuesday vs. Kinston, 7:05 p.m. -- Two-for-Tuesday presented by Bartles & Jaymes

Buy two Reserved or Grandstand tickets for the price of one! That's right, bring a friend, co-worker, or an entire gaggle of kids from the neighborhood and get Reserved and Grandstand tickets two for the price of one! To paraphrase Ernie Banks, "Let's bring two!"

Wednesday vs. Kinston, 7:05 p.m. -- Military Appreciation Night presented by Classic Rock 94.7

Every Wednesday, Classic Rock 94.7 and the Washington Nationals salute all men and women who gave of themselves to protect our country on Military Appreciation Night. All active and retired military receive half price Reserved and Grandstand tickets with a valid military identification.

Thursday, May 11, vs. Kinston, 7:05 p.m. -- Family Night Thursday presented by The Washington Post

Friday, May 12 vs. Myrtle Beach, 7:05 p.m. -- Internet Safety Night presented by Integrated Digital Systems

Before and during the game, fans will find information on the concourse & video board to help them stay safe on the internet. There will be many prizes to be given away throughout the evening. Kids, bring your parents to the game and afterwards, stick around and run the bases like your favorite ballplayer! That's right, you get to go down on the field and run around the bases at 'The Pfitz' after the game!

Saturday, May 13 vs. Myrtle Beach, 7:05 p.m. -- SCREECH is back with post-game FIREWORKS presented by Classic Rock 94.7 and provided by Fire in the Sky Pyrotechnics

Screech had so much fun on April 29 that he's decided to come back for another great night of baseball, fun and to see his new friend Uncle Slam again. See Screech scratch his way around the stadium. After the game, we'll have our second fireworks show of the season presented by Classic Rock 94.7 and provided by Fire in the Sky Pyrotechnics.

Sunday, May 14 vs. Myrtle Beach, 1:05 p.m. -- Autograph Sunday presented by MIX 107.3 and Kids Run the Bases

Here is your opportunity to meet the Nationals before the game as part of Autograph Sunday presented by MIX 107.3. Two Potomac Nationals players will sign autographs on the concourse before the game and then afterward, all fans 16 and under are invited to run the bases like their favorite ballplayer! It's going to be a great Sunday for baseball, don't miss it.
