at First Tennessee Park. Iowa has clinched the five-game set with a 5-3 win yesterday thanks to a five-

run third inning. Today, right-hander Phillips Valdez starts for the Sounds against right-hander Trevor

Clifton for the Cubs.

Phillips Valdez: 27-year-old Phillips Valdez starts for the Sounds tonight. The right-hander is making

his 2019 debut. Valdez has the longest professional tenure of Nashville's starters thus far, entering

his 10th professional season. Valdez split the 2018 season in the Washington Nationals organization

between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse. He began the season with Harrisburg and was

promoted to Syracuse on April 30 for the remainer of the season. He made five relief appearances with

Harrisburg, with four of those outings being 2.0 innings or longer and allowed 3 ER in 10.2 IP (2.45

ERA). In Syracuse, he served as a reliever in 7 of his first 9 appearances and won both of his starts.He

served as a starter for his final 17 games (from June 3 - remainder of the season) and went 4-7 with a

3.14 ERA (100.1 IP/35 ER). Overall in 2018, the Dominican Republic native went 6-7 with a 2.73 ERA

in 31 games (19 starts).

He signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers on December

21, 2018.

He was o

riginally signed by the Cleveland Indians on May 29, 2009 .

Trevor Clifton: 23-year-old Trevor Clifton starts for the Cubs in game five. The right-hander is

making his 2019 debut. He spent the 2018 season splitting his time between Double-A Tennessee and

Triple-A Iowa. In 26 games (22 starts), he went 7-7 with a 3.43 ERA. Rea covered 126.0 innings and

yielded 106 hits and 52 walks to go along with 101 strikeouts. The Maryville, Tennessee native made

one relief appearance last season at First Tennessee Park on July 8, where he threw 4.0 innings in relief

and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 1 hit, 1 walk, hit 3 batters and struck out 3 batters. The Sounds won

that game 5-3. In his minor league career, Clifton is 31-34 with a 3.82 ERA in 114 games (104 starts).

Rea was drafted by the Cubs in the 12th round of the 2013 MLB Draft.

Triple-A Debuts: Eight Nashville players have made their Triple-A debuts in the first three games of

the season. The list includes Taylor Hearn, Eli White, Jose Trevino, Brett Martin, Miguel Del Pozo,

Ariel Jurado, CD Pelham and Wes Benjamin.

Tennessee-Texas Two-Step: A new era of baseball began Thursday as the Sounds played first official

game as the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. The two clubs held a joint press conference at First

Tennessee Park on September 20, 2018 to announce the four-year Player Development Contract. Sev-

eral notable former Sounds also played for the Rangers at one point in their career, including Prince

Fielder, Nelson Cruz, Yovani Gallardo, Jonathan Lucroy and Jeremy Jeffress.

In the Pipeline: Four current Sounds are listed among MLB Pipeline's Top 30 Texas Rangers

prospects. Leading the group at #11 is left-handed pitcher Taylor Hearn. Left-handed reliever CD

Pelham checks in at #15, infielder Eli White follows at #16 and catcher Jose Trevino is the 25th-ranked

prospect in the system.

Jason Wood at the Helm: Jason Wood was named the 29th manager in Nashville Sounds franchise

history on January 8, 2019. The California native is managing the Rangers' Triple-A team for the fifth

consecutive season and has a career managerial mark of 583-538. As part of an 18-year professional

playing career, Wood played for the Sounds in 2000 and 2001 and is now the second former Sounds

player to return and manage the club (Marty Brown, a player in 1988-89, a manager in 2001-02).

Walk the Line: Through the first three games of the season, Nashville batters are T2nd in the league in walks (22) and have struck out the least amount among league batters (26). Sounds pitchers have walked just 14 batters, T5th lowest in the PCL

Season-long Hitting Streak: Eli White is the lone hitter that has hit safely in all four games for the Sounds in 2019. White is 5-for-13 (.385) with a double and triple, scoring 2 runs and knocking in 2 RBI. He has also walked 3 times while striking out twice.

Setting the Pace with Walking: Nashville outfielder Willie Calhoun leads the PCL in free passes with six in the early going. He has also reached base safely in all four games this season. Calhoun has 168 career walks against 243 strikeouts.

Well Attended: Through the first four games, Nashvill has averaged the highest attendance with 8,470 fans. The sellout on Friday night with an attendance of 10,010 is the third-highest attendance in the PCL this season.
