Nailers Trade Shane Bakker to Atlanta
September 21, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, have announced a trade, which takes effect immediately. Wheeling has dealt forward Shane Bakker to the Atlanta Gladiators in exchange for future considerations.
Bakker, 28, spent parts of three seasons with the Nailers, after Wheeling claimed him off of waivers from the Orlando Solar Bears on December 3, 2013. Shane made his professional debut later that week, and went on to register six goals, 12 assists, 18 points, and 76 penalty minutes in 49 games during his rookie campaign. The following season, the Navan, Ontario native returned to the Nailers and was named captain by then head coach Clark Donatelli. Bakker split the 2014-15 season between Wheeling and the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs, combining for four goals, ten assists, 14 points, and 139 penalty minutes in 58 contests. This past year featured a similar split during the regular season, but Shane upped his game during the playoffs, racking up five goals and 14 points in 26 games, as the Nailers won the Eastern Conference.
"We at the Wheeling Nailers are very thankful to Shane Bakker for his contributions to our team both on and off of the ice," said Nailers Head Coach Jeff Christian. "He was a great face for our team in the community, and will be a fan favorite with the Gladiators. We believe this trade will create a new opportunity for Shane to move up and become a more permanent player in the AHL."
Prior to turning pro, Bakker attended Carleton University for five years, where he played for the Ravens. During that time, Shane accumulated 17 goals, 31 assists, 48 points, and 398 penalty minutes in 121 games. His best season in school came in 2011-12, when he picked up seven goals and 13 points, despite appearing in just 20 contests. The 6-foot-4 forward also spent time in the CJHL with the Orleans Brass and Nepean Raiders.
"I want to express my thanks to the Wheeling fans for everything they have done for me," Bakker said. "Wheeling became a second home to me. I feel extremely fortunate to have spent my last three years of hockey there, and I'll be forever grateful for what the city and people of Wheeling have done for me, both on and off of the ice. I wish the Nailers good luck, and I'm very excited to start a new chapter in Atlanta."
The Nailers will begin the 25th season of professional hockey in Wheeling on October 15th, when they play host to the Brampton Beast at 7:05. The team will raise its Eastern Conference Championship Banner, and alumni such as Doug Sauter, Darren Schwartz, and Louis Dumont will be on hand for the celebration.
