September 21, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Mo.- The Missouri Mavericks were named the Heartland Corporate Citizen at the Truman Heartland Community Foundation "Toast to Our Towns Gala" on Saturday, September 17.
"There is nothing more special than the Missouri Mavericks being chosen as the Heartland Corporate Citizen by the Truman Heartland Community Foundation," said Mavericks owner Lamar Hunt Jr. "Competitive sports teams, by their nature are a unifying force in communities because of their high visibility and the fact that they can serve as a platform for so many community initiatives, especially for the very needy. The Missouri Mavericks ECHL franchise is proud to call Independence, Mo. its special home and proud of its service in the community for these past seven years. Missouri Mavericks hockey; ice hockey with a family-first attitude!"
The Heartland Corporate Citizen Award is given annually by the Truman Heartland Community Foundation to, "A corporate citizen whose generosity in charitable giving has had a significant impact on the region we serve." Past recipients have included Silverstein Eye Centers (2013), Centerpoint Medical Center (2010), and The Examiner (2006).
Since the Mavericks' inaugural season in 2009, they have helped raise more than $1million for charitable organizations throughout Jackson County. Annual fundraising efforts by the Mavericks include specialty jersey auctions, Dinner on Ice, and Cuck-A-Puck fundraisers at every home game.
One of the Mavericks' major projects was raising funds for the renovation of the Independence Police Department locker rooms. The team was able to raise $20,000 for the project and volunteered dozens of hours to help with the demolition of the old locker room. Full details on that project, and all of the Mavericks' community efforts for the last year are detailed in their 2015-16 Community Report, which can be [1]viewed here.
This is the second major community award the Mavericks have received in the last three years. In 2014 the team was given the Harry S. Truman Special Community Recognition Award for their outstanding philanthropic contributions to the Independence area over the last 5 years.
About the Missouri Mavericks: The Mavericks are members of the Mountain Division of the Western Conference of the ECHL- the Premier 'AA' Hockey League in North America.
