Nailers Sneak Past Walleye 5-4 in Game Three

(Wheeling, WV) Justin Mercier had a goal on eight shots on goal but the Walleye fell 5-4 in Wheeling on Wednesday night. The Nailers lead the best of seven series two games to one. Game four is Friday night at Wheeling.

Wheeling struck early as Riley Brace beat Jeff Lerg on a shorthanded breakaway 3:00 minutes into the first period. The Nailers took a 2-0 lead at 5:23 of the period when Brace deflected in a loose midair in front of Lerg.

Toledo exploded with four unanswered goals in the second period. At 1:56, Tyler Barnes set up Shane Berschbach (2) from behind the net to pull the Walleye within one. Cody Lampl (2) tied the game when his wrist shot beat Wheeling goaltender Franky Palazzese at 9:13. On the power play, A.J. Jenks buried a one-timer at 12:10 for the first Walleye lead of the net. The fourth consecutive Walleye goal came from Justin Mercier who buried a wrist shot at 16:02 for his first goal of the series.

Wheeling collected a goal with just 18 seconds left in the second period and the Walleye lead was 4-3 going to the third period. Wheeling tied the game at four with a goal at 6:30 of the third period. Nailers took the lead for good at 9:23 of the period when Adam Krause found a way to slide the puck past Lerg.

Walleye Notes: Goaltender Jeff Lerg had 19 saves on the 24 shots he faced. The 52 shots on goal set a new Toledo Walleye playoff record surpassing the 45 they had on April 12, 2013 at Cincinnati. Toledo allowed only one shorthanded goal during the regular season, October 24, 2014 at Brampton.
