Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, have announced two transactions, which both take effect immediately. Wheeling has received forward Jarrett Burton from the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Additionally, the Nailers have loaned forward Garrett Meurs to the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals.
Burton, 26, is no stranger to the Nailers, but he will be making his first trip to Wheeling in the 2016-17 campaign. Thus far this season, Jarrett has appeared in 13 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, collecting one goal and ten penalty minutes. The Echo Bay, Ontario native is playing in his third full season as a pro, and was a big part of last year's run to the Kelly Cup Final. He joined the Nailers late in the opening round, and went on to produce seven goals, seven assists, and 14 points in 21 games, including four game winning goals - two of which were scored in overtime. Prior to that, Burton tallied 15 goals and 38 points with Wheeling during the regular season, and has career totals of 27 goals, 39 assists, and 66 points in 98 ECHL contests.
Meurs, 23, goes to the American Hockey League for the first time this season, after getting off to a strong start with the Nailers. In 31 games so far this year, Garrett is the team leader with 13 goals, while ranking second on the club with 24 points. This is the Wingham, Ontario native's fourth professional season, as he spent each of his first three campaigns in the Colorado Avalanche organization with the Fort Wayne Komets, Lake Erie Monsters, and San Antonio Rampage. 2015-16 was the most productive season for Meurs, as he amassed 18 goals, 17 assists, and 35 points in 51 games with the Komets. Garrett's career has been split between the ECHL and AHL levels, as he has suited up in 112 games in the ECHL and 87 matches in the AHL.
Jarrett Burton and the Wheeling Nailers will begin a busy week of games on Wednesday night, when they play host to the Toledo Walleye at 7:05 on a WesBanco Winning Wednesday. The Nailers will also take the ice at home on Saturday night against the Kalamazoo Wings at 7:35 for Star Wars Night. Fans can meet the Star Wars Characters, plus the team will be wearing Jedi jerseys, and there will be a backpack giveaway for the first 1,000 kids. Later in the month, the Nailers will clash with the Brampton Beast on January 28th, which is Pittsburgh Penguins Night, starring Pascal Dupuis.
