Jackals Play Fourth Straight Road Game

Game 32: Elmira Jackals (7-19-5-0) vs. Adirondack Thunder (16-10-2-3)

7:00 p.m., Glens Falls Civic Center, Glens Falls, New York

The Jackals play the final of four straight road matches as they visit the Adirondack Thunder for the third time this season, but the first time since late October. It's the fifth match of the season between the clubs and the first of three meetings in January .

The Thunder have lost four of their last five games to drop to 16-10-2-3 on the season, giving them 37 points and putting them in fourth place in the North Division. The Thunder hold a two-point lead over Wheeling for the final playoff spot out of the North Division . Adirondack is in the middle of a stretch of 14 straight games against the North, which continues with three-straight games against Manchester later this week.

The Jackals have lost all three games on this road trip, including a pair of losses in Norfolk against the Admirals to open 2017 last weekend. With 19 points, the Jackals are in sixth place in the North Division and 13th place in the Eastern Conference. Tonight concludes a four-game road trip for the Jackals, who host the Reading Royals twice this weekend.

Last time out

The Norfolk Admirals scored three power-play goals and Brandon Anderson stopped 30 shots as Norfolk shut out the Jackals, 3-0, Jan. 7 at the Norfolk Scope .

The Admirals dominated the first period, grabbing a 2-0 lead by taking advantage of multiple Jackals penalties. Jaedon Descheneau opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 6:46, backhanding a rebound in the slot for a 1-0 lead. Brodie Dupont scored about four minutes later for another power-play goal and a 2-0 Norfolk lead as the Admirals outshot the Jackals 14-2 through a period.

Elmira picked up its game over the final two periods, but couldn't cut into the Norfolk lead. In fact, Dupont increased the lead to three with another power-play goal at 5:30 of the second period to give the Admirals a 3-0 lead. The Jackals outshot the Ads, 28-15 over the last two periods, but Anderson stopped them all for Norfolk's second shutout win over the Jackals this season .

Head-to-head

Tonight is the fifth of 10 head-to-head matches between the clubs in 2016-17 and the third at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Two of the four games have gone past regulation with the Jackals winning in a shootout and the Thunder picking up an overtime win in their last meeting Dec. 22. The Thunder have wins in three of the four matches overall.

Mikkel Aagaard leads all players with five points (1g, 4a) in the season series and Greg Wolfe (2g, 2a) is next with four points in four games. Greg Betzold (1g, 1a) and Sebastien Sylvestre (1g, 1a) are the only active players with more than one point for the Jackals against the Thunder.

In net, Andy Iles has appeared in three of the four games and is 0-2-1 with a 3.60 goals-against average and an .899 save percentage. For the Thunder, Mason McDonald is 2-0-0 with a 2.40 goals-against average and an .898 save percentage.

Game 25: Jackals rally from three-goal deficit, lose in OT to Thunder

The Jackals overcame a 3-0 deficit to force overtime, but lost to the Adirondack Thunder, 4-3, in OT Dec. 22 at First Arena.

The Thunder built up a 3-0 lead in the first period, scoring three goals in just over seven minutes. Peter MacArthur started it with a deflection goal at 11:31. Alex Fedoseyev struck on a breakaway with five minutes left in the first period and then Gunnar Hughes made it 3-0 at 18:52. The Jackals began the comeback moments later, with Greg Betzold stashing a centering pass from Tyson Fawcett with 27 seconds left in the first.

The Jackals rallied with two more goals in the third period to force overtime. Kyle Rankin tipped Guy Leboeuf's point shot at 10:03 to make it a one-goal game and then Greg Amlong scored his first professional goal on a slap shot from the point for a game-tying power-play goal with 2:15 remaining in regulation. Greg Wolfe won the game with 4.3 seconds to play in overtime on a rebound at the right circle .

Scouting the Thunder

The Thunder have lost four of their last five games, which includes a 1-3-0-0 record against the Reading Royals. Adirondack is now 16-10-2-3 on the season, giving them 37 points and putting them in fourth place in the North Division. The Thunder hold a two-point lead over Wheeling for the final playoff spot out of the North Division.

Adirondack is 13th in the ECHL at 3.35 goals per game, but they are averaging just 2.60 goals per game over their last five games. Ty Loney leads the team with 29 points (14g, 15a) in 29 games, with 10 of his points (5g, 5a) coming on the power play. Peter McArthur (9g, 12a) and Alex Wall (3g, 18a) are tied for second with 21 points and are the only other two players who have eclipsed 20 points for Adirondack.

In goal, J.P. Anderson was acquired from Wheeling a few weeks ago and has started the last three games for the Thunder. In five appearances for Adirondack, Anderson is 2-2-0-0 with a 2.95 goals-against average and an .898 save percentage. Mason McDonald has appeared in 18 games and has a 9-6-1-2 record along with a 2.76 goals-against average and an .897 save percentage .

Special teams

The Thunder's power play ranks seventh in the ECHL at 19.2% (23-for-120), although there is a slight drop off at home, where they have converted on 17.5% of their power plays. In the season series against Elmira, the Thunder are just 2-for-12 (16.7%).

The Jackals power play went 0-for-5 in their last game in Norfolk, making them 1-for-11 in the weekend set against the Admirals. It snapped a string of three straight games with a power-play goal. Overall they are 18th in the ECHL at 15.4% (16-for-104). Their road power play ranks 23rd overall at 10.4% (7-for-67).

Adirondack's penalty kill is 24th in the ECHL entering tonight at 79.8%. The Thunder have allowed 22 power-play goals in 109 chances this season, but they are better at the Glens Falls Civic Center, turning aside 81.8% of opposition power plays. They have allowed three power-play goals against the Jackals this season.

The Jackals penalty kill struggled in their Saturday game in Norfolk, allowing three power-play goals in five shorthanded chances. That dropped the Jackals two percentage points on the penalty kill and moved them to 16th in the ECHL at 83.3%.
