Mystics Sign Alicia "Sug" Sutton, Waive Essence Carson

Washington, D.C. - The Washington Mystics announced today that they have signed guard Alecia "Sug" Sutton. Washington originally selected Sutton with the 36th overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft from the University of Texas before waiving her on May 25.

Sutton (5-8), averaged a career 8.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 131 career games (65 starts) for the Longhorns. In her senior season, she averaged 9.9 points and a team-high 4.1 assists per game, which ranked fourth in the Big 12. Sutton was a two-time Nancy Lieberman Award Top-10 Finalist (2019, 2020) and was named to the 2020 All-Big 12 Second Team. The St. Louis, MO native was also named to the 2020 Academic All-Big 12 First Team and finished her career at Texas tied for ninth in program history in career assists with 419.

In a related move, Washington waived guard Essence Carson. Carson appeared in 10 games for the Mystics this season, averaging 4.3 points and 1.8 rebounds in 16.8 minutes per game.
