Mystics Acquire Tasha Humprhey

Washington, D.C. - The Washington Mystics have acquired 6'3 Forward Tasha Humphrey, 5'11 Forward Eshaya (Shay) Murphy and a second round pick in the 2009 WNBA draft from the Detroit Shock in exchange for Mystics Forward Taj McWilliams-Franklin, general manager Linda Hargrove announced today. Per company policy, terms of the newly acquired players' contracts will not be released.

"Tasha is a versatile rookie post that can shoot the three and score in a variety of ways, her game resembles that of Tina Thompson and she has the potential to develop into one of the best power forward in the league" stated Hargrove, "Shay is a high-energy second year player who works hard on the defensive end."

Humphrey was selected in the first round (11th overall) of the 2008 WNBA draft. She is averaging 7.3 points per game and 2.9 rebounds per game. She is among the top ten leaders in the WNBA in field goals per 40 minutes (8.35). Humphrey leads all rookies in free throw shooting (.955) and is ranked second in 3-pt field goal percentage (.385)

A graduate of the University of Georgia, Humphrey completed her career among the school's all-time leaders in various categories such as free throws taken and made, points, double-doubles and rebounds. She was named to the All SEC First-team for four consecutive years (2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008). Humphrey earned various accolades such as WBCA Kodak All-American and Women's National Basketball Service All-American First Team. In 2005, she was named the Co-National Freshman of the Year and the SEC Freshman of the Year.

Murphy was selected in the second round (15th overall) of the 2007 WNBA draft by the Minnesota Lynx. A graduate of the University of Southern California, Murphy has recorded career numbers of 4.3 points per game and 2.7 rebounds per game. At USC, She was named to the All-Pac-10 First team in and was a Kodak/WBCA All-America Finalist.

McWilliams-Franklin joined the Mystics in April 2008 and has appeared in all of the team's 26 games this season. She averaged 13.3 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game.

"Even though Taj was here for a short period of time, she had a tremendous impact on our team. Her leadership abilities and professionalism will impact the players she mentored for years to come," said Hargrove.

To make room on the roster, Washington also waived Forward Kendra Wecker. She joined the team on June 23, 2008.

The team will resume the 2008 season on Friday, August 29th against the Chicago Sky at 7:00 p.m. Individual tickets are currently on sale on www.ticketmaster.com.
