WINSTON-SALEM, NC (MAY 20, 2010) - Brett Oberholtzer tossed six strong innings to out-duel Nevin Griffith and beat the Dash 3-1 on Thursday night at BB&T Ballpark. The win earned a split of the four-game series for the Pelicans as they quieted the Dash offense for the fourth straight contest.

A day after Winston-Salem (28-13) and Myrtle Beach (13-28) played 29 innings in two games, the teams were content for a regulation nine-inning contest on Thursday. This game started similarly to Wednesday's nightcap, with an early inning Dash solo home run. Justin Greene pummeled a 1-1 pitch to left field for his fifth home run to give Winston a 1-0 lead.

Shaky defense cost Nevin Griffith (4-1) and the Dash in the fifth inning, as the Pelicans plated three unearned runs. Ryan Barba reached on a fielding error by Eduardo Escobar. Cole Miles and Mike Daniel followed with singles. Barba attempted to score on Daniel's single, but was thrown out at the plate by Brandon Short. The throw allowed both of the other runners to advance into scoring position with one out.

Luis Sumoza hit a ball to third base, but Jon Gilmore's throw brought Seth Loman off the bag for another error, which allowed Miles to score from third. Gerry Rodriguez then grounded out to third, scoring Daniel and giving the Pelicans a 2-1 lead.

The next batter, Calvin Culver, cracked a base hit to left. Ozzie Lewis came up throwing home, but Sumoza was able to beat it out to score the third run of the inning for Myrtle Beach. Culver was thrown out trying to reach second base on the play to end the inning. All three runs were unearned to Griffith, who left the mound trailing 3-1.

Oberholtzer (2-3) allowed six base hits over his first four innings, but finished the last two very strongly. He struck out the last five batters he faced and finished with six strikeouts on the night.

The Dash had its best scoring chance in the seventh inning, when Oberholtzer had departed. Van Pope retired the first two batters of the frame before walking two straight. He fell behind 2-0 on Greene and was replaced by Rocket Wheeler mid-at-bat. Benino Pruneda came on and struck out Greene to end the threat and the inning.

Pruneda also pitched the final two innings for his second save of the season, preserving the win for Oberholtzer.

Griffith was charged with his first loss, despite allowing no earned runs over seven innings.

Jon Gilmore was the only Dash player to post a multi-hit game. He went 3 for 4 to raise his season batting average to .346.

Winston-Salem begins a three-game weekend series with the Lynchburg Hillcats on Friday night. The Dash swept the ‘Cats last weekend in three games at City Stadium. RHP Stephen Sauer (3-1, 5.30) goes for his third straight win against RHP James Avery (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on www.wsdash.com beginning at 6:45 p.m.
